Job summary

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is seeking enthusiastic Band 5 Therapeutic Radiographers to join our high-performing, patient-focused radiotherapy service.

This is an exciting opportunity for newly qualified or early-career radiographers to begin or continue their radiotherapy career within a welcoming, supportive and forward-thinking department. You will be supported to develop confidence, competence and clinical skills across treatment and pre-treatment areas while delivering safe, compassionate and high-quality care to our patients.

You will be joining at a transformative and exciting phase of service development. Our department is at the forefront of innovation, with:

Expanding the use of Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) to more body-sites on Expanding the use of the new electronic patient record system, utilising electronic communication with patients. The commissioning of a new, state-of-the-art Treatment Planning System As a Band 5 Therapeutic Radiographer, you will be fully supported through both the Trust preceptorship programme and our local radiotherapy-specific preceptorship pathway. You will be allocated a named mentor within the department to provide regular guidance, supervision and encouragement as you consolidate your skills, build confidence and progress in your professional development.

Main duties of the job

Deliver safe, accurate and high-quality radiotherapy treatment as part of the linear accelerator team, with support and supervision appropriate to your stage of development. Rotate through treatment and pre-treatment areas, including RT-CT and pre-treatment data entry, developing skills across the patient pathway. Support the planning and delivery of radiotherapy across a range of tumour sites, working within departmental protocols and under the guidance of experienced radiographers. Contribute to effective patient workflow and day-to-day service delivery, escalating appropriately and working collaboratively with the wider multi-disciplinary team. Work flexibly in line with service demands, including extended hours, weekends, and Bank Holidays. Provide consistently exceptional, patient-centred care, ensuring compassion, dignity, and professionalism at all times.

Band 5 radiographers are supported through the Trust preceptorship programme and a local radiotherapy-specific pathway, with structured learning, regular review, protected support and a named mentor to guide development.

You will have access to CPD and education opportunities including competency-based training, involvement in service improvement, audit and research.

The department is equipped with modern technology, including two matched Elekta Versa linacs, Mosaiq, Pinnacle TPS transitioning to Eclipse, Limbus AI, and a Canon Aquilion CT scanner.

Specialist roles include Support and Information, Urology, Colorectal and Gynaecology Specialist Radiographers, with independent prescribing expertise within the team.

We have a strong culture of innovation and research, including involvement in an award-winning late effects service, a dedicated Research Radiographer within Oncology Research and Development, and active participation in clinical trials.

Future plans include commissioning a new Treatment Planning System and progressing towards back-to-back linear accelerator replacements.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience Essential

BSc (Hons) Degree or PgDip in Therapeutic Radiography or Diploma of College Radiographer DCR(T) HCPC Registration Evidence of CPD A thorough and detailed knowledge of principles and concept underpinning the broad range of applications and techniques used in radiotherapy Able to communicate complex information, requiring empathy and reassurance Effective interpersonal and communications skills Ability to use own initiative and work as part of a team Experience of working with a range of radiotherapy equipment Experience using online IGRT inc CBCT Experienced in a range of treatment techniques e.g. Palliative, VMAT, DIBH

Additional relevant short specialist courses Experience of working with Elekta linacs
