About this role

Job summary

Join Our Team as an Associate Practitioner in a UKAS Accredited Microbiology Laboratory staffed by a friendly, busy and professional team of highly motivated BMS and support workers, dealing with around half a million samples per year.

The department operates a 24/7 working pattern, in which you may be required to participate.

Main duties of the job

To assist Biomedical Scientists in the provision of an efficient and effective Clinical Microbiology service.

To perform routine diagnostic laboratory tests, after appropriate training and assessment and under the direction of a registered biomedical scientist, accurately recording and reporting results.

To perform molecular testing and daily running of molecular suite, after appropriate training and assessment and under the direction of a registered biomedical scientist, accurately recording and reporting results.

To participate in the training of other laboratory groups as appropriate.

Required to work one day (or equivalent) every fourth weekend and participate in the early shift, late shift, and potentially night shift rotas as part of contractual hours. May be required to cover shifts at short notice.

Bacteriology Serology and Virology Mycology Parasitology (Faecal) Media preparation. Receiving, sorting and handling samples of urine, faeces, blood and other body fluids.

Person Specification

Eductaion and qualifications Essential

Relevant Foundation Degree, Level 4 BTEC, IBMS Certificate of Achievement Level 2, or equivalent Experience at Band 3 (ATO/MLA) level in a clinical microbiology laboratory

Desirable

Evidence of involvement with training in other laboratory areas, e.g H&S, training

Experience Essential

Experience in working with molecular testing analysers Experience in data entry Experience in staff supervision

Audit experience

Skills Essential

Good standards of written and verbal communication Ability to communicate at all levels Ability to work to Standard Operating procedures, with good attention to detail Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information
