About this role

Job summary

We are looking for a caring, enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly Healthcare Support team and wider multidisciplinary team, helping us provide safe, effective and compassionate care to our patients.

Previous General Practice experience is desirable but not essential. We welcome applications from individuals with relevant healthcare experience who are keen to develop their skills within primary care. Full training and support will be provided to develop the clinical skills and competencies required for the role.

This is a varied and rewarding role, with opportunities to undertake clinical observations, venepuncture, ECGs, diabetic foot checks, urinalysis, vaccinations and support health promotion and preventative care. You will work closely with our experienced nursing team and wider clinical team.

We are looking for someone who is reliable, patient-focused and compassionate, with a positive attitude and the ability to work confidently both independently and as part of a team.

Main duties of the job

Undertaking routine clinical observations and procedures within your training and competence.

Carrying out venepuncture, ECGs, urinalysis and diabetic foot checks following appropriate training.

Supporting wound care, health promotion and preventative care activities.

Administering B12 injections under an appropriate Patient Specific Direction, where trained and authorised.

Preparing and processing clinical specimens in accordance with Practice procedures.

Maintaining accurate clinical records and respecting patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality.

Working effectively as part of the Healthcare Support Team and wider multidisciplinary team

Job description Job responsibilities

The Healthcare Assistant will undertake a range of clinical support duties as part of the Healthcare Support Team. The post holder will contribute to the assessment, monitoring and ongoing care of patients, working within their agreed competencies and following Practice policies and clinical procedures.

The role will involve undertaking routine clinical procedures, maintaining accurate patient records, preparing clinical equipment and specimens, and supporting the nursing team with the delivery of preventative and health promotion activities.

The post holder will be expected to recognise and appropriately escalate any concerns regarding a patient's health, wellbeing or safeguarding, and to seek support from a registered healthcare professional where required.

You will work closely with nurses, GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team, while also being able to organise and manage your own workload. Maintaining patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality and safety will be fundamental to the role.

Working Hours

37.5 hours per week (full-time) preferred. We may also consider applications from candidates seeking a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Working hours will be scheduled within the Practice's opening hours Monday to Friday 08.00 to18:30 and Saturday: 09.00 to 17:00

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Relevant healthcare qualification such as NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care, or equivalent experience or qualification. GCSE Grade C or 4 or above in English and Maths, or equivalent.

Desirable

NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent. Relevant phlebotomy training or qualification. Training in long-term condition management. Other relevant clinical training or competencies.

Personal Qualities Essential

Caring, compassionate and patient-focused. Reliable, enthusiastic and motivated. Organised and able to manage competing priorities. Flexible and adaptable to the needs of a busy Practice. Confident and professional in communicating with patients and colleagues. Recognises own limitations and knows when to seek appropriate support. Committed to ongoing learning and development.

Experience Essential

Experience of working as a Healthcare Assistant or in a relevant healthcare support role. Experience of providing care to patients or service users. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. A caring, professional and patient-focused approach. Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect patient privacy and dignity. Willingness to learn and undertake clinical training and competency assessments.

Desirable

Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant within General Practice or a primary care environment. Experience of undertaking clinical observations and routine clinical procedures. Experience of using SystmOne or another electronic clinical record system. Experience of venepuncture - phlebotomy. Experience of ECG recording, diabetic foot checks or other primary care HCA duties.
