Job summary
We are looking for a caring, reliable and enthusiastic individual to join our friendly Healthcare Support team as a phlebotomist.
Previous phlebotomy or healthcare experience is desirable but not essential, as full training and support will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is keen to learn, develop their clinical skills and build a career in healthcare within General Practice.
You will play an important role in providing a professional, reassuring and positive experience for patients attending for blood tests. You will develop the knowledge, practical skills and competency required to undertake phlebotomy safely and confidently.
We are looking for someone who is patient-focused, approachable and reliable, with a positive attitude and a genuine commitment to learning and providing high-quality patient care. Experience working with the public and excellent customer service skills are essential.

Main duties of the job
Undertake venepuncture/phlebotomy safely and effectively within your training, competenceand agreed scope of practice.
Provide a caring, professional and reassuring experience for patients attending for blood tests.
Correctly identify patients and ensure samples are accurately labelled, recorded, handled and prepared for transportation in accordance with Practice and laboratory requirements.
Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control, patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
Accurately record clinical activity and relevant information in the patient's clinical record.
Maintain clean, safe and appropriately stocked clinical areas and report any equipment or supply issues.
Work effectively with GP Assistants, Nurses, GPs, Healthcare Assistants and the wider multidisciplinary team.
Support patients who may be anxious or require additional reassurance.
Participate in training, supervision and competency assessments, with a commitment to ongoing development.
The role requires a flexible and adaptable approach to meet the changing needs of the service, including responding to changing workloads, priorities and patient requirements. The postholder may be required to undertake other appropriate duties within the scope of the role to support the effective operation of the clinical service.

As a phlebotomist you will work as part of the Healthcare Support team to provide a safe, effective and patient-focused phlebotomy service. The role will involve undertaking venepuncture, preparing and handling blood samples, maintaining accurate clinical records and supporting patients throughout the blood-taking process.
The postholder will also undertake routine health assessment measurements, including recording height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), smoking and alcohol status.
The role will involve working closely with the nursing team, GPs, GP Assistants, Healthcare Assistants and wider multidisciplinary team, maintaining high standards of infection prevention, confidentiality, patient dignity and safety. The postholder will work within their training, competence and agreed scope of practice and contribute to the smooth and effective delivery of clinical services.

Working Hours
37.5 hours per week (full-time) preferred. We may also consider applications from candidates seeking a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Working hours will be scheduled within the Practice's opening hours, Monday to Friday 08.00 to18.30 and Saturday 09.00 to17.00

Qualifications Essential
English and Maths qualification at GCSE Grade C or 4 or equivalent, or demonstrable equivalent literacy and numeracy skills.
Desirable
Recognised Phlebotomy/Venepuncture qualification or relevant competency-based training. NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service or equivalent relevant experience/qualification. NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent. Additional relevant clinical or healthcare qualifications
Experience Essential
Experience of working with patients, service users or the general public. Experience of providing good customer service and communicating effectively and professionally with patients and colleagues. Ability to work independently and as part of a wider clinical team. Good attention to detail and a commitment to accurate record keeping and handling of clinical information. Understanding of patient confidentiality, privacy and dignity. Ability to remain calm, patient and reassuring when supporting patients who may be anxious or nervous about blood tests. Willingness to undertake relevant training and maintain clinical competence.
Desirable
Previous experience of phlebotomy/venepuncture, preferably within a healthcare or General Practice setting. Experience of working within a clinical or patient-facing environment. Experience of undertaking routine health assessments or clinical observations.
