Job summary

The Head of Commercial Finance will lead financial oversight of all commercial activities across The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic NHS Foundation Trust (RJAH). The role supports RJAH's strategic ambition to improve lives through excellent innovation and care by ensuring commercial income streams, ventures, partnerships and contracts are financially robust, deliver value, and are aligned with the Trust's priorities and values.

The postholder will be responsible for high-quality financial planning, analysis, commercial modelling, and performance reporting to enable strong financial governance and efficient use of resources, in line with RJAH's strategic priorities.

The role will influence decision-making across the organisation and with external partners, ensuring that commercial interests of the Trust are realised to support long term financial sustainability.

The post holder will be part of the newly formed Commercial Enterprise Team reporting into the Commercial Director.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide senior financial and commercial leadership across the Trust's commercial services, supporting the delivery of strategic objectives through expert financial advice, robust governance, and commercially focused decision-making. Working closely with Executive Directors, clinicians, managers and external partners, the role will lead on financial modelling, pricing strategies, business case development, contract negotiations and performance reporting, ensuring that commercial activities are financially viable, deliver value for money and comply with NHS, HM Treasury and regulatory requirements.

The role will also identify and develop new income generation opportunities, optimise existing services, and provide financial leadership for private patient services and wider commercial ventures. The post holder will oversee commercial financial planning, forecasting, income assurance and risk management processes, while building strong relationships across the Trust and externally to support innovation, partnership working and service development. In addition, the role will contribute to the leadership and development of the wider Finance and Commercial function, promoting financial awareness, continuous improvement and a culture of collaboration and accountability.

Duties include:

Provide strategicfinancialadvice to Executive and Board-level committeesproviding clear recommendations and accountability for delivery

Ensure strong financial governance over commercial operations

Maintain robust risk management processes, ensuring early identification and mitigation of commercial risks.

Develop a suite of enhanced financial and activity reporting for the Trusts commercial services for a wider variety of stakeholders including managers, executives, committees and clinicians

Use in depth specialist knowledge of NHS legislation and financial policies and draw on benchmarking and networks to provide financial advice, challenge and leadership on developments.

Provide expert financial modelling and pricing for commercial ventures

Support Trust leadership in identifying new income opportunities and optimising existing ones.

Support negotiation of commercial contracts, ensuring cost recovery, sustainable margins, and alignment withRJAHs strategic aims

Provide leadership, line management and development to finance and/or commercial staff as required

Build financial capability across clinical and operational teams through coaching and training.

Contribute to the leadership of the wider Finance and Commercial function

Contribute to the development and review of Trust policies relating to commercial activity, pricing, and income generation

Work collaboratively with commercial partners, system partners, and NHS organisations to develop service models and cross-organisational opportunities

Provide financial leadership on all commercial contracts and partnerships, ensuring appropriate risk sharing, financial safeguards and value for money

Ensure robust financial controls, income assurance processes and reconciliation arrangements are in place across commercial activity

Oversee invoicing, reconciliation, and validation processesas required for commercial activities.

Ensure full compliance with NHS financial regime, HM Treasury guidance, IFRS and Trust Standing Financial Instructions

Analyse, interpret and present, with a clear ability to focus on the main issues, highly complex, sensitive, or contentious information that confirms, constrains, or influences the direction of proposals.

Support the development business cases ensuring that commercialand financial acumen are applied to complex and potentially risky casesalignedwith Trust priorities. Ensure challenge is provided to enable the optimisation of benefits, income generationand saving opportunities.

Ensure the impacts of developments are reflected in forecasts, in year financial performance monitoring and financial planning.

Tosupport the Head of Private Patient Servicesand the Commercial Directorin negotiations with the Private Medical Insurersusing highly developed financial analysistosecure the best tariffsfor the Trust.

To provide robust financial forecasting of income and expenditure for commercial services linking closely with finance management colleagues to assess risk and mitigations.

To lead on the analysis and setting of fixed cost patient packages to ensure full recovery of expenditure and overheads including a margin to ensure a commerciallyviable private patient business.

To lead on price benchmarking and pricing strategy for the private patient services at the Trust using relationships, market intelligence and Trust data to establish the optimal price points for each service.

Qualifications / Training Essential

Educated to degree level in a related subject CCAB qualified Leadership or management qualification Evidence of senior professional development

Significant post-qualification experience in a complex public or private sector environment Extensive senior experience in private healthcare / commercial NHS services Experience working in a senior finance role demonstrating track record success Evidence of extensive experience in financial reporting, business case development and improvement Extensive influencing and negotiating experience with internal and external stakeholders
