Heavy Diesel Truck Mechanic - $100k Job DescriptionThis role focuses on diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing heavy diesel semi-trucks and trailers within a growing fleet. You will perform comprehensive bumper-to-bumper mechanical and electrical repairs on tractors and trailers, including engine, chassis, brake, HVAC, and body work. The position also involves MIG welding and fabrication, use of diagnostic tools, and basic computer work to document repairs and communicate progress.Responsibilities
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair semi-trucks and trailers, including Freightliner, Volvo, and Western Star units. • Perform bumper-to-bumper repairs on tractors, including intakes, radiators, air conditioning compressors, oil pans, steering gears and tie rods, alternators, chassis components, and routine oil changes. • Replace and service tires, brakes, brake chambers, and air brake systems on heavy trucks. • Carry out trailer repairs and body work, including trailer tail and rear fairing, mirrors, antennas, windows, fifth wheel components, mud flaps, cross members on the frame, differentials, air valves, and hoods. • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems up to 12V, including wiring, lighting, windshield wipers, and HVAC controls. • Perform engine diagnostics and aftermarket treatments on engines, including cab and emissions systems in Freightliner and Volvo trucks. • Use MIG welding and fabrication skills to repair and reinforce truck and trailer components as needed. • Conduct preventive maintenance on diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and related heavy equipment components. • Read and interpret blueprints or technical diagrams as needed for repairs and installations. • Use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively to complete repairs. • Maintain accurate records of work performed by logging into the system to update repair status, document findings, and send emails regarding progress. • Follow established safety procedures and best practices while working in a heavy equipment and recycling yard environment. • Collaborate with team members and other departments to ensure trucks and trailers are repaired efficiently and returned to service promptly. Essential Skills
• At least 2 years of experience as a diesel technician or diesel mechanic working on heavy trucks and trailers. • Proven ability to replace tires and perform brake work, including brake chambers and air brake systems. • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues on tractors and trailers, including bumper-to-bumper repairs. • MIG welding experience and ability to perform fabrication work on truck and trailer components. • Strong diesel engine repair and maintenance skills, including engine diagnostics and preventive maintenance. • Experience with trailer repair, including structural and body work on heavy trailers. • Mechanical aptitude with proficiency using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment. • Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems up to 12V, including wiring, lighting, and related components. • Understanding of hydraulics, transmissions, and heavy equipment systems. • Basic computer skills to log work orders, update repair progress, and send emails. • Valid driver’s license, with willingness to obtain Class A and B licenses through company-supported programs. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints or technical documentation related to mechanical and electrical systems. Additional Skills & Qualifications
• Experience using diagnostic software such as Insight and Detroit Diesel software is preferred. • Class A CDL license is a plus. • Experience in auto or diesel engine maintenance, diesel technician work, or trailer mechanic roles. • Familiarity with HVAC systems on trucks, including troubleshooting and repair. • Experience working with heavy equipment and tractor-trailer configurations. • Strong troubleshooting mindset and ability to work independently on complex repairs. • Willingness to pursue paid education and certification opportunities offered by the employer. The environment can be dirty and dusty, and conditions vary with the seasons, being cold in the winter and hot in the summer, reflecting a typical heavy industrial setting. The schedule runs Monday through Friday, generally from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with an expectation of about 45–50 hours per week and regular overtime availability. You will work directly with heavy diesel trucks, trailers, welding equipment, hand tools, diagnostic tools, and computer systems used for logging repairs and communication. Dress will be appropriate for a hands-on mechanic role in a rugged, industrial yard and shop environment. Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of Toledo, OH. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $125000.00/yr.
