Job Title: Structural Steel Welder – 1st ShiftJob DescriptionJoin a long-established, family-owned steel fabrication company in the Columbus area that specializes in structural steel for schools, hospitals, banks, and multi-story buildings. In this role, you will weld structural steel components according to blueprints, contribute to high-quality fabrication projects, and develop your skills through on-the-job training and certification. Responsibilities • Weld structural steel beams together in accordance with detailed blueprints and project specifications. • Perform MIG and flux core welding on structural steel ranging from approximately 1/16 inch up to 2 inches in thickness. • Complete a 16-gauge steel weld test in a flat position and perform additional weld tests on various sizes as required. • Work primarily in flat-position welding, ensuring approximately 90% of welds meet quality and safety standards. • Review and interpret blueprints to lay out pieces accurately before welding and assembly. • Assemble and weld pre-laid-out components into finished structural assemblies, maintaining accuracy and alignment. • Assist with fabrication tasks such as grinding, layout inspection, and general finishing work to ensure high-quality end products. • Operate a forklift as needed to move materials and finished assemblies safely around the facility. • Support other employees and projects by filling in where needed across different roles in the fabrication shop. • Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area in a busy fabrication environment. Essential Skills • Prior welding experience specifically on structural steel components. • Proficiency in MIG welding and flux core welding on various steel thicknesses. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and apply them to layout and welding tasks. • Capability to perform welds predominantly in a flat position, with approximately 90% of work in this position. • Experience with fabrication processes, including layout and assembly of steel components. • Basic skills in grinding and layout inspection to ensure weld quality and dimensional accuracy. • Willingness and ability to assist in different roles within the facility, including operating a forklift and supporting other projects. • Readiness to complete a 16-gauge steel weld test in a flat position as part of the hiring process. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Prior fabrication experience in a structural steel or metalworking environment. • Experience laying out pieces from blueprints for structural assemblies. • Exposure to TIG welding techniques, even if not the primary welding process used. • Comfort performing various weld sizes and adapting to different project requirements. • Interest in obtaining an AWS certification, with training and certification provided by the company. Work EnvironmentThis role is based in a non-climate-controlled steel fabrication facility in the Columbus area, where you will work around structural steel beams and heavy fabrication equipment. The standard schedule is a 1st shift, typically 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with an alternative schedule of 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday when needed. You will work in a hands-on, industrial setting that involves welding, grinding, layout, inspection, and occasional forklift operation, requiring appropriate work attire and adherence to safety practices suitable for a fabrication shop environment. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grove City, OH. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
