Job Title: Painter/Blaster - 4 week contract - Local onlyJob DescriptionThe Painter/Blaster performs abrasive blasting and industrial painting to prepare and protect a wide range of vessel surfaces, including interior and exterior tanks, engine rooms, machinery spaces, and other compartments. This role prepares coating materials, applies paints and coatings to specified thicknesses, and ensures all work meets technical, environmental, and safety requirements within a shipyard environment.Responsibilities
• Perform abrasive blasting operations for surface preparation of interior and exterior tanks, engine rooms, interior compartments, and other designated areas according to project specifications for each vessel. • Prepare surfaces by blasting, cleaning, masking, and mixing coating materials, including two- or three-part paints, in accordance with written technical directions. • Apply coatings to tanks, voids, bilges, passageways, machinery and propulsion spaces, interior bulkheads, and exterior surfaces using brushes or rollers to achieve the required paint millage. • Perform surface preparation using needle gunning, hand sanding, or mechanical sanding to ensure proper adhesion and finish before final painting. • Apply paint and coatings free of discontinuities such as holidays, runs, and drips, maintaining a high-quality finish on all surfaces. • Follow environmental requirements and best shipyard practices for the acquisition, application, removal, and disposal of paint, paint waste, and residuals in compliance with OSHA requirements and applicable federal and state laws. • Measure, cut, and install insulation materials, including taping and covering, as part of insulation systems on designated areas. • Measure, cut, and apply vinyl stickers to hulls and assemblies as required by project specifications. • Work collaboratively as a member of a team, communicating effectively, adapting to changing priorities, interpreting instructions, and contributing to problem-solving efforts. • Consistently embrace and promote a strong safety culture by practicing safe shipyard work practices and adhering to all safety procedures and guidelines. Essential Skills
• Hands-on experience with abrasive blasting and sandblasting for industrial or shipyard applications. • Proficiency in industrial painting, including preparation, mixing, and application of two- and three-part paints. • Ability to perform paint preparation tasks such as cleaning, masking, and surface conditioning for a variety of substrates. • Skill in using brushes and rollers to apply coatings to achieve specified film thickness (paint millage). • Experience with needle gunning, hand sanding, and mechanical sanding for surface preparation. • Knowledge of proper techniques to avoid paint defects such as holidays, runs, and drips. • Understanding of OSHA requirements and environmental regulations related to the handling, application, and disposal of paints and related materials. • Ability to read, understand, and follow written technical directions and project specifications. • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to safe shipyard work practices. • Effective communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively within a team environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications
• C7 or C14 blasting or industrial painting certifications are a plus but not required. • Experience working in a shipyard or marine industrial environment. • Familiarity with industrial coating systems and insulation systems. • Ability to measure, cut, and install insulation materials, including taping and covering. • Experience applying vinyl stickers or decals to hulls and assemblies. • Adaptability to work on a variety of surfaces and in different compartments, including confined or complex spaces. • Strong attention to detail and quality-focused mindset in all aspects of surface preparation and coating. Work involves abrasive blasting, industrial painting, and surface preparation in spaces such as tanks, voids, bilges, passageways, machinery and propulsion spaces, and exterior hulls. The position requires regular use of blasting and painting equipment, hand and mechanical sanding tools, needle guns, and materials such as two- and three-part paints, insulation, and vinyl stickers. The work setting may include varying temperatures, noise, and confined or elevated spaces typical of shipyard operations. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required at all times, and employees follow strict safety and environmental procedures in line with OSHA and regulatory standards. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Everett, WA. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $31.00 - $34.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
