About this role

Job summary

Newcastle Sexual Health Team have an exciting opportunity for a passionate and committed Health care Support Worker. We are looking for a Health Care Support worker, who is friendly and enthusiastic, with a flexible approach to provide support to the clinical team. This is a permanent position, which will predominantly be based within the community sexual health clinic at Newcastle Sexual Health Service in Summerhill. However, there may be times when the employee would need to work at Gateshead Trinity Square Health Centre and Palmers Community Hospital in Jarrow and outreach clinical locations.

We are a friendly, community based, multi-disciplinary team. We are committed to delivering high quality, integrated sexual health care for the local population, our service includes both contraceptive and genito-urinary medicine. The post-holder must be able to maintain a sensitive and non-judgemental approach to support patients with their sexual health needs.

Main duties of the job

The sexual health service is part of the community directorate within South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Health Care Support Worker and:

Demonstrate they have previous experience working within a health care setting.Maintain and respect strict confidentiality standards for service users.Maintain a sensitive and non-judgemental approach when working with service users.The post holder will be required to work evening and weekend duties as part of a monthly roster.The post holder will be required to travel between clinic locations and for meetings as necessary.The post holder will work effectively as part of the wider sexual health team and demonstrate excellent communication skills.

To work as a member of the Sexual Health Service providing care for patients attending integrated/GUM and CASH settings.To support and assist qualified nursing staff in the provision of skilled nursing care.To ensure that the highest level of patient care is achieved at all times in the most effective manner.To assist with the day to day care of patients.Chaperone for and assist medical and nursing staff during procedures e.g. taking specimens and biopsy.Perform venepuncture (unsupervised) at the request of medical/nursing staff and be able to interpret clinical requests accurately from the medical record.To work with service users in a non judgemental manner in order to promote health outcomes.To comply with the Trusts vision, values and behavioural compact.

Skills and Knowledge Essential

Understanding and experience of delivering holistic care Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative Good interpersonal skills and able to maintain confidentiality Ability to organise and prioritise workload Flexible, motivated and positive approach to career development Works to agreed standards and within protocols under supervision Willing to undertake further training to support role development

Desirable

IT skills Skills in an acute or community health setting

Experience Essential

Experience of working in a NHS nursing environment Experience of performing diagnostic tests e.g. venepuncture and screening for chlamydia and gonorrhoea

Physical Skills Essential

Ability to assist clients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy Carriage of equipment necessary for role Car driver with access to a car

Qualifications Essential

NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualification

Desirable

NVQ level 3 or working towards in Health and Social Care
