Job summary

Excellent job opportunities are available for Healthcare Assistants at South Tyneside andSunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) based at Chester Wing Outpatients Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital or Galleries Outpatient Department, at Galleries Health Centre, Washington.

We expect you to display the appropriate behaviours and attitudes required to provide safe and compassionate care to our patients, possess Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy qualifications and be prepared to achieve or demonstrate competencies in a range of tasks including taking blood, blood pressure and other observations/recordings.

We provide a comprehensive Care Certificate Programme (which consists of both classroom based and self-directed study at home) that will support you in achieving the competencies and skills required to deliver quality patient care. All Healthcare Assistants must complete this programme andachieve their competencies within 14 weeks of commencing in Post.

Main duties of the job

You will be based at Chester Wing Outpatient Department at Sunderland Royal Hospital or Galleries Outpatient Department, at Galleries Health Centre, Washington however, will be required to work at any ofour sites which also includes South Tyneside (ST) Hospital, Palmer Hospital, Moorlands within ST Hospital and Community Clinics in Sunderland and South Tyneside districts.

The shift patterns are usually 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday.

You will be joining a team across sites of Senior Nurses / RNs and HCAs who are dedicated to providing the highest standards of patient care. Working with Clinicians and AHPs from a wide range of specialties you will provide nursing support to a diversity of patient caseloads.

Some of the key responsibilities of this role will be:

Assist the Registered Nurse in the deliveryof indirect / direct patient care and treatment as requested;

Contribute to the Registered Nurse assessment of a patient by undertaking a number ofinvestigations and reporting findings to the Registered Nurse, including but not limited to patientweight, height, BMI, temperature, blood pressure, respirations, pulse, ECG recording, and BM recording. Training will be given.

Undertake phlebotomy where advised by the Registered Practitioner.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Maths and English at Level 1 or above (GCSE AE or equivalent).

Desirable

NVQ Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care / customer care or equivalent in any subject.

Skills and Knowledge Essential

Ability to communicate messages and instructions accurately to colleagues, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrate good customer care skills and the ability to communicate effectively with the patients, carers and visitors. Presents self as courteous, respectful and helpful. Basic keyboard and IT skills. Willingness to complete Competency Based Assessments and a Portfolio of evidence, in order to achieve the Care Certificate and any other training related to this role. Work effectively under direct supervision as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Experience Essential

Substantive customer services experience or experience of working in a caring role (paid or unpaid).

Physical Skills Essential

Ability to assist patients to move, as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
