Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced NMC registered nurse to join our Surgical Acute Pain Service.
The Surgical Acute Pain Service covers acute hospital sites Monday to Saturday daytime, with remote support to community hospitals.
This post is based at University Hospital of North Durham; however occasional cross site working may be necessary.
The candidate must be a first level NMC registered nurse, will have significant post registration experience with an interest in acute pain management. You will be an integral part of our small, well established and supportive multidisciplinary team.
Working in a fast-paced inpatient setting. You will practice independently, provide specialist advice, education and support to staff, patients, their families and carers.
The individual must be enthusiastic, committed and demonstrate a passion for delivering the highest standard of patient care though quality improvement and education.
The successful candidate should be able to develop and facilitate education packages linked with acute pain management. Work in a supervisory way to support junior staff and demonstrate good communication and leadership skills.
The role requires you to develop your skills by working towards and completing Clinical Skills and non-medical prescribing qualifications.
Main duties of the job
To provide patients and their relatives/carers, nursing and medical staff with specialist advice and support to manage acute pain and complex symptoms in an acute hospital setting.
To ensure safety and efficacy of pain management techniques by regular patient contact and direct clinical care.
To regularly review the effectiveness of treatment plans and suggest changes as a result of new information or changes in a patient's condition. By working cohesively with all members of the multidisciplinary team and promoting effective liaisons, you will ensure the very best services to patients are provided at all times.
The role is crucial in raising awareness and promoting a wider understanding of pain and pain management strategies, requiring you to be actively involved in staff and patient education

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working closely with anaesthetists to provide specialist nursing support to surgical inpatients.
Responsible for own caseload of patients under the care of the Acute Pain Service.
Provide advice and skilled technical support to ward staff for those patients
receiving specialist analgesic techniques.
To provide clinical and education support to patients and their relatives regarding pain management.
To support the paediatric epidural service at UHND.
To provide clinical support to anaesthetic team/acute pain management clinicians.
Provides and delivers educational opportunities for staff within CDDFT NHS Trust.
Attends meetings deemed necessary within the service and other areas within the CDDFT NHS Trust.
To ensure a high level of professional awareness, both personally and within the Acute Pain Service.
To participate in clinical governance and clinical supervision activities within
Directorate / division as appropriate.
Ability to conduct, evaluate and implement research findings to ensure evidence based practice is conducted for acute pain management interventions.
Participate in clinical audit.
COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Managerially responsible to Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in Acute Pain. Will work closely with clinical leads in acute pain management.
Develop close links with other specialist nurses within the team and other allied health professionals.
Liaising with all appropriate members of multi-disciplinary team and
ensuring a seamless service between acute and primary care services
Communicating very sensitive condition related information to patients and
relatives, requiring high levels of empathy and reassurance. This includes
highly complex information that needs to be conveyed in easily understood
language
Ensuring the provision of appropriate verbal and written patient
information, empowering the patient to make informed decisions

Must have experience with pain related devices Must have at least 2 years' experience working within a surgical environment

Experience in acute pain service role Experience with B Braun PCA and Micrel infusion pumps.
