About this role

Job summary

We are delighted to share the opportunity of a full-time vacancy for a band 5 staff nurse to join the endoscopy team at Darlington Memorial Hospital. We welcome both experienced and newly qualified staff nurses.

Within endoscopy no two days are the same, we are looking to recruit highly motivated, dynamic forward thinking nurses who will help provide a safe high quality service to patients trust wide The endoscopy service provides a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for both in patients and out patients carried out within our two procedure rooms.

Main duties of the job

Our nurses ensure the safe admission, recovery and discharge of patients. They support the patient in the procedure room assisting our consultants and nurse endoscopists with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Patients attend the endoscopy department for various different tests including colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, gastroscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy, EUS and ERCP. At Darlington we specialize in therapeutic procedures including Radiofrequency ablation, Alpha PH capsule monitoring and we also run a nurse led cytosponge service.

Patients are referred into the endoscopy service via different routes; GP referrals, surveillance programmes, Bowel Cancer Screening programme or they are referred via the multi-disciplinary team.

We also support ward patients providing an emergency/in patient service.

We are proud to provide a comprehensive in house training programme which is led by our practice educator ensuring all staff feel supported and competent in their abilities. All trained members of staff participate in an out of hours on call rota for upper GI bleeds.

Job description Job responsibilities

We provide a detailed and supported training programme to ensure all competencies are achieved and assessed via knowledge and practice. When you join the endoscopy team we would ensure a mentor is allocated who would hold regular meetings with their trainee to guarantee a friendly and supported working environment. Your mentor would support you through all areas of the endoscopy training programme. These responsibilities include admitting patients onto our unit and consenting them for non-therapeutic procedures. Supporting sedated and unsedated patients through the recovery process and discharging them giving them detailed information about their test and their diagnosis. The endoscopy nurse will also learn how to support the patient in the procedure room, monitoring their condition, drawing up and administrating medication. They will also be responsible for supporting the endoscopist who is performing the procedure. This includes taking biopsies, assisting with polyp removal and supporting various therapeutic procedures in the later stages of their training. There are numerous career progression avenues within the service including becoming a nurse endoscopist, senior nurse or nurse specialist within one of the multidisciplinary teams.
