Clinical Midwifery Manager for Intrapartum Care

The Clinical Midwifery Manager for Intrapartum care is a senior clinical leader responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and compassionate care to women, pregnant people and families during labour and birth.

As a key member of the maternity leadership team, the Matron provides visible, accessible, and authoritative presence across intrapartum services, including the Labour Ward, Birthing Centre, Obstetric Theatres and Maternity Triage and associated areas.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide visible clinical leadership across all intrapartum areas.

Ensure safe, high-quality, and compassionate care during labour and birth.

Manage and support midwifery staff, ensuring appropriate staffing and skill mix.

Lead on patient safety, clinical incidents, and national maternity safety initiatives.

Drive continuous improvement through audits, governance, and evidence-based practice.

Support staff development, training, and performance management.

Oversee infection control, safeguarding, and maintain a safe care environment.

Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, and retention.

Manage budgets and support service efficiency improvements.

Person Specification

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS Essential

First level registered Midwife Clinical experience relevant to the post Post-graduate qualification relevant to the role

Desirable

Masters Qualification relevant to health care Professional Midwifery Advocate

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Essential

Clear understanding of the national and local Healthcare agenda. Record of achievement in managing performance. Experience of chairing multidisciplinary meetings. Sound knowledge of Ockenden recommendations, Maternity Transformation, Better Births, Saving babies lives and NHS Resolution Maternity incentive Scheme Sound understanding of clinical Risk Management

EXPERIENCE Essential

Significant experience at Senior Management level in maternity services. Expertise within the Delivery Suite setting Proven track record of clinical management in a multi-disciplinary environment Proven track record of planning and implementing service change Proven track record of staff and budget management A good understanding of the changing NHS environment
