About this role
The 2nd Shift Mechanic Fleet Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all fleet maintenance activities during second shift operations. This position supervises diesel mechanics and technicians, ensures preventive maintenance and repair work is completed safely and efficiently, manages work orders, and maintains fleet reliability to support operational goals. The supervisor promotes a culture of safety, productivity, accountability, and continuous improvement while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership & Supervision
• Directly supervise and support second-shift mechanics and maintenance personnel. • Assign daily workloads and prioritize repairs based on operational needs. • Monitor employee performance and provide coaching, training, and development. • Conduct shift meetings and communicate maintenance priorities. • Ensure proper staffing levels and approve timekeeping records. Fleet Maintenance Operations
• Oversee preventive maintenance (PM) programs for fleet vehicles and equipment. • Ensure timely diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. • Verify quality of completed repairs and maintenance work. • Monitor fleet downtime and implement corrective actions to improve equipment availability. • Coordinate major repairs with vendors and outside service providers when necessary. Safety & Compliance
• Enforce OSHA, DOT, EPA, and company safety standards. • Conduct routine safety inspections and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). • Ensure vehicles meet federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. • Maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records. Planning & Administration
• Review and manage work orders through the company's maintenance management system. • Monitor parts inventory and coordinate ordering of required materials. • Assist in managing maintenance budgets and controlling repair costs. • Prepare shift reports, performance metrics, and maintenance summaries. • Support fleet audits and compliance inspections. Continuous Improvement
• Identify opportunities to improve maintenance processes and shop efficiency. • Analyze recurring equipment failures and develop solutions. • Promote a team-oriented culture focused on safety, quality, and customer service. Qualifications Education
• High school diploma or GED required. • Technical or vocational training in diesel technology, automotive repair, or a related field preferred. • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred. This addition helps ensure the supervisor can move and test-drive fleet vehicles when necessary and has a working knowledge of DOT requirements. Experience
• 5+ years of fleet maintenance or heavy-duty diesel repair experience. • 2+ years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred. • Experience managing preventative maintenance programs and fleet operations. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, air brake systems, and heavy equipment maintenance. • Understanding of DOT regulations and fleet compliance requirements. • Ability to diagnose complex mechanical issues. • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). • Ability to prioritize workloads in a fast-paced environment. Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work in a shop environment for extended periods. • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. • Ability to work around machinery, tools, and varying weather conditions. • Must be available for after-hours emergency support as needed. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
