Job summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Ward Nurse to join our team at James Paget NHS Trust, supporting weekend service delivery within a high-quality clinical environment. This role offers the opportunity to provide essential patient care alongside theatre services, working across specialties including general surgery, ENT, and gynaecology.
As a Ward Nurse, you will be responsible for delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care, supporting patients pre- and post-operatively. You will assess, plan, and implement care, ensuring patients are well-prepared for surgery and receive appropriate monitoring and support during recovery on the ward.
Working within a structured shift pattern, you will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure smooth patient flow, maintain high clinical standards, and contribute to efficient service delivery. This role requires flexibility to work early and late shifts on a rotational basis across weekends, within a supportive and well-established team environment
Main duties of the job
Deliver day-to-day nursing care for patients following gynaecology, ENT, and general surgery proceduresMonitor and record vital signs, recognising and escalating any signs of deteriorationManage wound care, drains, and dressings relevant to each specialtyAdminister medications, including pain relief, antibiotics, and IV therapiesSupport post-operative recovery, including mobility, nutrition, and personal careObserve for complications (e.g. bleeding in gynae, airway/swallowing issues in ENT, infection in general surgery)Provide patient education on recovery, wound care, and discharge instructionsCommunicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including doctors, therapists, and discharge coordinatorsMaintain accurate and timely patient documentation in line with NHS standardsEnsure infection prevention and control measures are followed at all times
