Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced doctor to join Somerset NHS Foundation Trust as an Clinical fellow (IMT3) in Acute Medicine based at Yeovil District Hospital.
This is a registrar-level role within a busy Acute Medical Unit (AMU), providing excellent exposure to acute internal medicine and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). The post offers the opportunity to develop as a Tier 2 decision maker, with strong consultant support and a structured educational environment.
The role is ideal for doctors preparing for higher specialty training in Acute Internal Medicine.
Main duties of the job
Work as a Tier 2 registrar-level clinician in Acute Medicine
Provide senior clinical input in AMU and SDEC, ensuring effective assessment and initial management of acute medical cases
Support day-to-day operational functioning of the Acute Medical Unit alongside acute physicians
Participate in the Acute Medical Registrar on-call rota (approx. 1:13) including nights, weekends, and long days
Supervise junior doctors and contribute to teaching and training
Perform key clinical procedures such as:
Lumbar punctureChest aspiration and drain insertionAscitic paracentesisCardioversion

Qualifications Essential
GMC registration with licence to practise Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification MRCP Part 1
Desirable
MRCP Part 2 and PACES Additional postgraduate qualification
Experience Essential
Minimum 4 years NHS experience Completion of Core Internal Medicine Training (or equivalent) Experience in acute internal medicine settings
Desirable
Experience working at IMT3/ST3 level
Additional Criteria Essential
Strong clinical decision-making and prioritisation skills Competence in core IMT procedural skills Effective communication and teamwork
Desirable
Understanding of audit and quality improvement processes
