Job summary
The Health and Care Intelligence Specialist Apprentice will work within the Data Science Department to develop skills in analysing health and care data to support public health outcomes, policymaking, and service improvement.
The post holder will undertake a structured apprenticeship programme, gaining practical experience alongside formal training. They will work under the supervision of experienced analysts and data scientists, supporting the delivery of analytical work while developing skills in data analysis, statistical methods, and data visualisation.
The role is designed as a developmental opportunity, enabling the post holder to build the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to progress into a more senior analytical role over time.

Main duties of the job
This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of population health and service improvement, supporting the use of data to improve outcomes for patients and communities across Somerset.
You will work alongside experienced analysts and data scientists to deliver insight that informs decision-making, helping shape prevention programmes and service redesign. This will include supporting projects focused on population health priorities such as inequalities, long-term conditions, and demand on services.
You will help develop dashboards, reports and visualisations, and support the translation of complex data into clear messages for a wide range of stakeholders. You will also contribute to understanding variation in outcomes and identifying opportunities for improvement.
The role provides the opportunity to work collaboratively with partners across health and care, gaining exposure to system-wide initiatives including integrated data platforms and pathway transformation work.
Alongside practical experience, you will undertake a structured apprenticeship programme, developing your skills in data analysis, communication, and applied analytics in a real-world healthcare setting.

Job description Job responsibilities
The Health and Care Intelligence Specialist Apprentice will work within the Data Science department to support the analysis and interpretation of health and care data, contributing to service improvement, population health management, and evidence-based decision-making across Somerset.
The post holder will support the delivery of analytical projects aligned to organisational priorities, including population health programmes, prevention initiatives, and service transformation. This will involve working with a range of health and care datasets, developing skills in data analysis, statistical methods, and data visualisation under the guidance of experienced analysts and data scientists.
Key responsibilities will include assisting with the production of analytical outputs such as reports, dashboards, and visualisations, and supporting the identification of trends, patterns, and inequalities within data. The post holder will contribute to translating complex data into clear and actionable insights for a variety of stakeholders, including clinicians, operational managers, and system partners.
The role will involve working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across health and care, including public health, operational, and digital colleagues, to ensure that analytical work meets system needs and supports programme delivery. The post holder will also develop an understanding of population health approaches, including segmentation, risk stratification, and evaluation of interventions.
The apprentice will support the development and improvement of analytical tools and processes, including querying databases and contributing to the maintenance of data systems. All work will be undertaken in line with data governance, confidentiality, and information security standards.
Alongside on-the-job learning, the post holder will undertake a structured Level 7 apprenticeship programme, developing the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for a career in health and care intelligence. This includes building capability in analytical techniques, communication, stakeholder engagement, and applying data to real-world healthcare challenges.
The role requires strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, adapt to changing priorities, and work both independently and as part of a team. The post holder will be expected to demonstrate a proactive approach to learning and continuous professional development.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4, or above or functional skills Level 2 in Maths and English. Level 6 qualification (BSc) in a relevant subject that includes a statistical module.
Desirable
Exposure to maths, statistics, and data analysis.
Experience Desirable
Experience working with healthcare data.
