About this role

Job summary University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Locum Consultant in Oral Surgery to join our established and supportive team at Bristol Dental Hospital.

This fixed-term post (commencing in September and ending 31 March 2027) offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a high-quality, patient-centred service within a busy and diverse Oral Surgery department. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver specialist care across a broad case mix, including both adult and paediatric patients.

Main duties of the job

Deliver high-quality Oral Surgery care across outpatient, day case, and theatre settings. Undertake triage of referrals and provide specialist advice and guidance to colleagues. Run new and follow-up clinics, including joint multidisciplinary clinics (e.g. Orthodontics/Oral Surgery and TMJ). Provide treatment under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation, and general anaesthesia across Trust sites. Support delivery and oversight of the Emergency Dental Service (within core hours). Contribute to service planning and management of clinical caseloads to meet RTT and operational targets. Play an active role in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement. Supervise and support Dental Core Trainees, Clinical Fellows, Specialty Trainees, and SAS colleagues.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training Essential

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (or equivalent) Full registration including specialist list for Oral Surgery with the UK General Dental Council (GDC) OR Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview

Desirable

Completion of an SAC approved Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training (CCST) in Oral Surgery, or evidence of within six months by date of interview, or equivalent Additional training beyond CCST e.g., Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE) in Oral Surgery (or equivalent) or within six months of completion. Higher academic qualification e.g., MSc or PhD High level recognition of teaching, such as a qualification or Fellowship of Higher Education Academy (FHEA) or equivalent

Experience and Skills Essential

Evidence of training and experience in Oral Surgery covering the full scope of the RCS SAC specialty syllabus Evidence of capability of delivering Level 3 care (NHS Oral Surgery Clinical Standard 2023) Ability to work independently and take responsibility for delivering clinical service Ability to lead in clinical areas, including adult and paediatric general anaesthetic and sedation Ability to appraise scientific literature critically, with a positive approach to evidence based practice and lead on implementation in clinical practice Ability to prioritise clinical activities to meet patient and service needs Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty

Desirable

Evidence of a special interest and expertise that aligns with local strategies such as paediatric oral surgery and temporomandibular disorders Ability to network within local and regional services for the benefit Broad range of IT skills

Clinical Governance, Audit, Management and Leadership Essential
