We are on the hunt for a passionate and experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our Cellular Pathology team based at Charing Cross Hospital. We are a hub of innovation, commitment, and excellence and are looking for you to embark on a rewarding journey with us.

North West London Pathology (NWLP) is an NHS pathology partnership joint venture between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. NWLP is modelled as a shared services organisation jointly owned by the three Trusts. The organisation is hosted by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and as the legal entity for NWLP our staff are employed by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.We also welcome applications from qualified, HCPC-registered Band 6 Biomedical Scientists who have completed their IBMS Specialist Portfolio and are eager to progress their career into a Band 7 Advanced Dissection role.

Main duties of the job

Identify and report clinical and non-clinical risks so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy. To plan and prioritise the scientific workload of the section on a day-to-day basis. To provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff. To possess highly developed, advanced specialist scientific skills. To ensure that the laboratory standard operational and health and safety policies are understood and carried out by all staff. Responsible for the maintenance, condition, quality control and record keeping of instruments and equipment associated with the section. Adaptation to new methodology or working practices when required, due to changing circumstances. Participation in and facilitation of Quality Assurance and Audit within the section. To be proactive in the generation and updating of standard operating procedures. To validate reports where appropriate. To authorise reports, when given the responsibility, in accordance with local policy. To assist in the implementation and development of new and existing techniques. To provide scientific advice and act as a resource both internally and externally. To maintain an awareness of current developments especially with regard to special areas of responsibility. Evaluate clinical information on histopathology request forms and understand specimen idiosyncrasies.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

Person Specification

Education Essential

HCPC Registration. MSc, FIBMS or equivalent in relevant discipline Demonstrable extensive relevant experience post HCPC registration in relevant discipline

Desirable

Management training IBMS Diploma of Expert or Advanced Practice in Histological Dissection

Skills Essential

Advanced practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work. Numerate. Competence in PC word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Ability to show flexibility by performing multiple tasks Prepared to work with biological materials.

Experience Essential

Knowledge of all aspects of specialist subject .Evidence of continuing professional development. Use of Pathology computer systems Evidence and experience of quality management systems, audits and document control Evidence and experience of quality control, assurance and governance Evidence of experience of training staff

Desirable

Previous experience in a large busy pathology laboratory
