Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our existing team as a qualified Anatomical Pathology Technologist to support Mortuary and Pathology Services for the Trust and surrounding Coronial jurisdictions. Nottingham University Hospital Bereavement Service manages approximately 6,000 deaths a year and performs 2,400 post-mortems including CT Scans. Established departmental specialties include neuropathology, paediatric and perinatal pathology and forensic pathology. The department also has specialist expertise in dealing with patients considered to be at high risk for infective processes including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
For those that do not hold the relevant qualification but have experience dealing with the deceased, there will be consideration for this to be a training post with a salary annexe applied.
Main duties of the job
As an Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT), the post holder is a key member of the Mortuary team, delivering a high-quality, cost-effective, and patient-focused service aligned with Trust objectives. The role involves supporting daily mortuary operations, including the respectful receipt and release of deceased patients from the Trust and wider community, maintaining accurate records, and carrying out general housekeeping duties.
The APT assists with the transfer and viewing of deceased patients, providing sensitive support to bereaved relatives. Duties also include preparing bodies for postmortem examinations, assisting pathologists during procedures, and reconstructing bodies afterwards to a dignified standard. Strict adherence to infection control, legal, ethical, and health and safety requirements is essential.
The role requires resilience to cope with distressing situations involving deceased individuals of all ages, alongside a compassionate and professional approach. High standards of personal presentation and communication are expected always.
Based across QMC and City Campuses, the post holder must learn all aspects of mortuary work and demonstrate basic IT skills. Working hours are 7.5 hours per day within a 7:30am-6pm service, with flexibility required, including weekends.
Previous experience with deceased patients is essential. Candidates without formal qualifications but with relevant experience may be considered for a training post with a salary annex.
