Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly, supportive and forward thinking community dental team. This post is aimed at dentists looking to gain experience and skills within the CDS, whilst being fully supported by senior dentists and specialists. This is an informal development post which can be tailored to meet individual needs. We have a strong supportive culture for education and training within the team. The successful candidate will be working across all of our disciplines initially and will be encouraged to gain skills in Special Care Adult and/or Paediatric dentistry. Fully funded training and mentorship in sedation will form part of this development. We can also aid candidates wishing to pursue DCT1 or 2 by equivalence and can support most requirements needed for submission of a portfolio of evidence.
This role is offered as a 2 year fixed term. Previous post holders have gone on to have a career within the CDS, general practice or embarked on specialist training.
Plymouth Community Dental Services (PCDS), is a part of Livewell Southwest CIC. We provide specialist-led dentistry for people who cannot receive dental care from a general dental practitioner including. Our core service includes:
Oral SurgeryPaediatric Dentistry- Routine and Special CareSpecial Care Dentistry for AdultsUrgent Dental CareUnder these services we offer treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia in partnership with University Hospitals Plymouth.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide a full range of NHS dental care (with support where required) to:
Routine and Special Care PaediatricsSpecial Care Adult patientsPatients requiring oral surgeryPatients requiring urgent dental careSupport will be given to gain experience in carrying out treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia.

The post holder will be a qualified dentist.
This role allows the post holder to undertake a range of duties within Plymouth Community Dental Services (PCDS). The focus on this post will be on informal development and training allowing the post holder to gain skills above the level of a general dental practitioner in paediatric and special care adult dental provision. There will also be the opportunity to undertake minor oral surgery.
The post holder will be encouraged to develop skills under the guidance of Specialist clinicians in MOS, Special Care and Paediatrics and undertake further training in conscious sedation and GA exodontia within a secondary care setting. The aim of this post is to gain the skills required of a Tier 2 practitioner in Paediatric and Special Care (Adult) dentistry.
This is an informal development opportunity and does not attract a National Training Number.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or equivalent Current GDC registration without restrictions NHS performer number Evidence of CPD and have a current Personal Development Plan
Desirable
MFDS (or equivalent) or working towards this

Experience Essential
Experience in providing NHS dental care. Demonstrable excellent clinical skills. Computer and IT literate and experience using dental software programmes and digital radiographs. Able to work independently and as part of a wider team.
Desirable
Experience of treating children and adults Additional experience of minor oral surgery. Experience of dealing with medically compromised patients. Participation in clinical audit. Previous use of Dentally software
