Job summary
We are in the exciting position of offering a fixed term Locum General Paediatric Consultant posts based at the Darlington Memorial Hospital at 10PA (full time, equivalent to 40 hour per week).
This is a traditional acute consultant post with regular on call (no middle-grade duties). We are seeking to appoint an experienced colleague with expertise to compliment the team of colleagues to cover a period of maternity leave.
Main duties of the job
This post to cover maternity leave will have the following objectives:
Full contribution to the Paediatrician of the Week and Paediatrician of the Day duties (POW and POD) rota to support paediatric in-patient unit, paediatric assessment unit, special care baby unit and on-call cover.
To deliver care to patients with common paediatric illnesses by participating in hot week which is currently 1 in 10. To manage paediatric and neonatal emergencies and provide leadership in stabilisation and transfer of sick children in hours and out of hours by participating in non-resident on-call rota (1 in 10).
To manage babies in special care baby unit (30 weeks and above) and supervising trainees in managing transitional care and post-natal ward babies.
To provide outpatient clinics: General Paediatrics & sub-speciality interest
To manage children presenting to the ward with acute safeguarding concerns and to participate in elective safeguarding clinics.
To participate in Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, quality improvement activities and to contribute to research activities.
To be a clinical supervisor and or educational supervisor to trainees and non-training trust.

The following provides details of the ward activity and clinical related activity components of the job plan which are annualised to 42 weeks per year.
The final job plan will be agreed with Clinical Director prior to commencing the post.
Acute Paediatric Duties (Annualised 10 PA over 42 weeks):
POW, M-F, 9am to 5pm (1 in 10) = 52 PA
POD, M-F, 9am to 10pm (1 in 10)= 91 PA
Weekends 9am to 6pm on site (1 in 10)= 31 PA
Non-resident on call (1 in 10)= 31PA
Outpatient:
General Paediatric & Sub-Speciality= 84 PA
Safeguarding Clinics = 21 PA
SPA= 63 PA
Other Admin / QI= 42 PA
Calculations based on 42 weeks / year
(6 weeks annual leave, 2 week public holidays and 2 weeks study leave)

Qualifications Essential
MRCPCH or equivalent On Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT/ CESR date.
Desirable
A higher qualification eg MSc in Paediatrics
Special Requirements Essential
Knowledge of evidence based medicine and critical appraisal
Experience Essential
SpR Training Programme in Paediatrics, or equivalent Broad acute, neonatal & community paediatric experience
Desirable
Relevant Training or SPIN module in Diabetes/ Allergy / Cardiology/ another paediatric sub-speciality at a recognised training unit
Special Skills & Knowledge Essential
Wide range of general paediatric and neonatal skills. APLS and NLS provider status or equivalent. Level 3 Child protection training
