Job summary
The post holder will provide specialist clinical and professional leadership to support the delivery of high quality care for women at risk of preterm birth, with a 60% clinical commitment including the management of a midwifery led preterm birth clinic. The role will be responsible for triaging referrals, coordinating care pathways, supporting multidisciplinary management and ensuring timely follow up of women accessing the service.
In addition, the post holder will contribute to the implementation and sustainability of elements 2-5 of the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle Version 3 (SBLCBv3) through education, audit, quality improvement and clinical leadership. Working collaboratively with consultant obstetricians, the Clinical Practice Education team, and governance colleagues, the post holder will support compliance with national maternity safety initiatives, undertake regular audits and promote evidence based practice to improve outcomes for women and babies. The role will provide visible clinical leadership, acting as a role model and expert resource for staff across the maternity service.
Main duties of the job

Job description Job responsibilities
Clinical or technical
Act as a role model demonstrating clinical leadership and midwifery expertise.
Be knowledgeable and experienced in caring for women across the antenatal and intrapartum period including labour ward and low risk settings such as community / birth centre.
Work closely with Maternal / fetal wellbeing lead consultants and external expert in fetal wellbeing assessment to implement clinical changes in practice
In collaboration with the relevant leads, maintain strategic oversight of the implementation, embedding and continual quality improvement of elements 2-5 of SBLCB3
Develop and provide midwifery expertise and clinical support to the Pre-term birth clinic and Inpatient areas with fetal surveillance.
Act as an advocate for women.
Be visible on Labour Ward, Abbey Birth Centre, Joan Booker Ward, Triage and Maternity Day Assessment Unit to initiate and/or lead discussion regarding fetal assessment.
Support physiological birth and normality in childbirth as appropriate, taking account of the womans individual needs and risk factors.
Ensure practice meets the requirements of a practising midwife in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Councils Midwives Rules & Standards & Code of Professional Conduct.
Ensure all records and documentation are accurate, legible and completed in a timely manner.
Maintain contemporary, evidence based professional knowledge and competence.
Leadership or managerial
Be an effective change agent for members of the maternity staff.
Lead by example, demonstrating a proven record of sound leadership, communication skills, management skills, courtesy and diplomacy, when dealing with colleagues and the general public.

Ensure maternity staff receive their Trust appraisal in line with Trust policy and guidance and take responsibility for own self-development through the appraisal system.
In conjunction with the CPE team inform the education commissioning needs of the service for area of responsibility.
Maintain and promote a professional attitude at all times, in the best interest of the patient and profession in accordance with the NMC standards and Trust Values.
Governance and Quality
Liaise with the Quality & Safety team to provide data for the maternity dashboard on compliance with SBLCB3.
Develop and maintain knowledge of risk management and untoward incident reporting policies and procedures. When requested, submit written reports regarding reviews of care provision or untoward incidents presenting at appropriate forums where required.
Participate in the reviews of clinical incidents and give feedback to individuals or groups on any recommendations.
Provide on a regular basis positive feedback and identify and disseminate learning from good outcomes.
Support staff in enhancing their skills in reducing risk within clinical practice.
Liaise closely with risk management team to ensure action plans are implemented and shared with staff.
Support the senior management team in the development and embedding of a safety culture within the context of multiple conflicting priorities.
Facilitate staff in developing and applying reflective practice skills.
Assist in the investigation of incidents pertaining to poor birth outcomes, implementing any recommendations arising from these investigations.
Training and Education
Liaise with the Clinical Practice Education (CPE) team and maternal / fetal wellbeing lead consultant obstetricians to provide education and training for maternity staff including delivery of emergency skills drill training (MDOT)
In conjunction with the CPE team and the fetal monitoring specialist midwife ensure that all staff are familiarised with fetal heart rate monitoring equipment and complete the required competency assessments including intelligent intermittent auscultation within the labour ward, birth centre and home environment.
In conjunction with the CPE team / Patient Safety Midwife ensure that all staff are familiarised with fundal height measurement and participate in the development of teaching / competency package
Develop staffs awareness alongside the fetal monitoring specialist midwife in recognising factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of cardiotocographs (CTGs) and impaired clinical decision making.
Ensure staff are assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman's health, pregnancy, gestation, clinical risk factors and stage of labour and use this to inform their decision making.
Provide teaching and support for staff who need to repeat the competency test.
Use every opportunity to facilitate teaching, learning and reflection within the clinical area.
Attend all statutory and mandatory training as and when required to do so.
