Job summary

The Northey Suite and Swift Ward Electives are seeking to recruit a General Porter to join a dynamic and supportive team.

The department delivers a responsive and efficient portering service across wards, theatres and departments, ensuring the timely movement of patients, equipment, and essential items to support safe and effective care delivery.

The postholder will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the unique nature of NHS services, recognising that patients and visitors may be experiencing pain, anxiety, or distress. A good level of physical fitness is essential, as the role may require a prompt response to emergency situations, including cardiac arrest.

Main duties of the job

Porters operate across the hospital site, providing a comprehensive support service that includes the safe and timely transfer of patients, specimens, equipment, and internal post.

The role requires a good level of physical fitness, as duties may include responding promptly to emergency situations such as cardiac arrest calls and assisting with patient evacuation when required.

Successful applicants must demonstrate effective communication skills, a good understanding of English, and basic IT proficiency.

Job description Job responsibilities

To provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors and Trust Colleagues

Porters are essential in maintaining the smooth running of a hospital; they move patients and equipment under tight time restraints.

Respond to all requests received via the helpdesk or internal communication system in a timely and efficient manner, complying with standards required and set by the NHS.

Participates in the first response to Fire, Major incident and Cardiac arrests in line with the agreed Trust procedures

Has a sound working knowledge of all portering tasks and response times, escalating to the help desk when unable to complete jobs in the prescribed timeframes

Works closely with all ward sister and teams to ensure they fulfil all duties to the required standard

Brings to the attention of the line manager any apparent deficiencies in systems of work or equipment provided that pose danger or risks to health and safety.
