About this role

Job summary

This is a full time clinical post based at The Royal Eye Unit, Kingston Hospital, to provide elective and emergency care for ophthalmology patients as part of a multidisciplinary team.

This is an ideal post for those aiming to obtain and develop basic sub specialty training in glaucoma whilst broadening their experienceof managing complex and secondary glaucoma.

There are two regular weekly theatre sessions. The post holder will receive training in cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery including trabeculectomy with antimetabolites, cyclodiode laser,minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and, based on experience, glaucoma drainage implant surgery and trabeculectomy revision.

A laser clinic to enable the post holder to gain experience in iridotomy and selective laser trabeculoplasty.

The post holder will have a weekly Eye Casualty session.

All glaucoma clinics are Consultant-led and based at Kingston Hospital.

There is no on-call commitment, evenings or weekend sessions.

All clinical staff are expected to attend the weekly departmental teaching session on Monday lunch time between 12.30-14.00 hours and monthly Clinical Governance half-day meetings.

The candidate will be expected to be flexible and amenable to changes in timetable in line with service developments and needs.

Equally the Trust will try and accommodate the candidates training and developmental needs and interests as much as possible when constructing the timetable.

Ultimately the agreed job plan will be based on the strengths of the successful candidate and needs of the service.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications Essential

Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council MRCS or equivalent qualification

Desirable

Higher additional qualification Presentations / publications

Clinical Experience Essential

Applicants must evidence at least 4 years of ophthalmic training equivalent to that recognised in the UK Able to deal with general Ophthalmology emergencies Evidence of participation in research and continued professional development Logbook indicating validated experience of appropriate range and number

Desirable

Experience in cataract surgery Competent in performing glaucoma laser procedures Attendance at relevant ophthalmic training courses Experience of developing effective and collaborative working relationships

Management Skills Essential

Able to communicate at a strategic and operational level

Desirable

Attended management training course Knowledge of finance / budgets

Experience in Training, Audit and Research Essential

Demonstrable commitment and ability to teach and train undergraduates and junior doctors. Experience of clinical audit. Relevant research articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Desirable

Completed 'Train the Trainers' course

Personal qualities Essential

Demonstrate leadership skills within a multidisciplinary team. Ability to motivate staff, to facilitate appropriate changes in clinical practice and to work as part Excellent written and verbal communication skills, enthusiasm and approachability.
