About this role

Job summary

We are looking for dynamic persons to join our team in the preoperative assessment department here at Wrightington Hospital.

You will play an important role in progressing our patients waiting for elective surgery through their preop journey.

We are a busy department with multiple clinics everyday Monday to Friday.We work along side many disciplines and specialities.

The postholder will commence as a Band 5 and will progress to a Band 6 following completion of the preoperative clinical assessment nurse training.

You will be required also to complete competencies following the training.

Enrolment to the Preoperative Association Course will be at the discretion of the manager.

Preoperative processes and procedures need be achieved with confidence in managing own patient caseload in clinic.

We are an established part of the greater Manchester Surgical Hub. The preoperative service works within GIRFT recommendations and NICE guidelines to deliver best practice to our patients.

The shift patterns will be between 07.30 to 17.00 hrs and any days from Monday to Friday with potential occasional Saturday working for ad hoc clinics.

Main duties of the job

This role will deliver direct patient care for patients who are to have Elective Orthopaedic/Surgical procedures. This will be undertaken by demonstrating skills that are specific to preoperative assessment that identifies the patient's fitness for the elective procedures through assessment.

This role will be undertaken by using nurse led preoperative assessment processes / tools that assess a patient's health and wellbeing in the pre assessment clinic. This will be supported by the nurse led processes, instigating and reviewing a range of medical investigations. By applying knowledge and an understanding of the relevant clinical examinations that the individual has been assessed to undertake that includes Cardio-Vascular, Respiratory, and Neck and Airway assessment. This will support the ongoing management of Elective Orthopaedic and Surgical patients throughout all aspects of their pathway.

The role will actively support the departmental Manager, supporting and providing leadership to other staff and in the absence of the department manager to provide evidence-based patient centred care.

Qualifications Essential

First Level Registered Nurse Evidence of ongoing CPD

Experience Essential

Recent and relevant clinical experience within a clinic setting Evidence of leadership taking charge in department

Demonstration of specialist clinical skills for effective patient management relevant to the service

Knowledge Essential

Knowledge of professional and NHS issues and policy relating to specialist area and role of a Pre op Assessment Nurse
