About the role
The School of Education, Communication and Society is advertising a fixed term 1 FTE lectureship in Applied Linguistics on King’s Academic Education Pathway (AEP) from 1st Sept 2026 to 30th June 2027. We are looking for a self-motivated individual who can make an exceptional contribution to teaching provision in the broad areas of applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and language education.
Candidates will hold a PhD in Linguistics, Language Education or a closely related area. They will have experience of teaching modules in Applied Linguistics at PG and UG level and an interest in innovation in teaching and learning.
The role holder will be contributing to the teaching on the BA English Language and Linguistics, including modules such as “Introduction to Sociolinguistics”, “Describing English Language” and “Qualitative Research Methods” and to the MA TESOL, where they will be contributing individual lectures to compulsory modules and lead seminars. Candidates appointed at level 7 will be expected to take on key administrative responsibilities. Further details on the expectations for grade 7 appointment are listed below.
To be appointed at grade 7 there is an expectation that candidates will be able to evidence the majority of the following:
A completed teaching qualification equivalent to a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice Having passed probation at a Higher Education Institution on an academic contract Having undertaken a significant administrative role Significant evidence of educational scholarship in Applied Linguistics through peer engagement, publication (including peer reviewed) or conference presentation
The position will be offered at Grade 6 or Grade 7 salary level, depending on qualifications
This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 30 June 2027. Candidates should be able to start by Sept 1st
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
PhD in Linguistics, Language Education or a closely related subject. Outstanding teaching ability. Expertise in Language Education and Sociolinguistics. Ability and willingness to make a broad contribution to teaching and supervision beyond specialist area. Strong communication skills with excellent written and spoken English Experience of teaching in UK Higher Education Experience of teaching in the areas of Linguistics and Education Experience teaching Qualitative Research Methods
Desirable criteria
Experience teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Demonstrable knowledge of emerging technologies in language education
