Job summary

We are recruiting for a full-time Locally Employed Doctor to join our Adult Inpatient Phoenix Ward in Oxford for a 12-month fixed term contract from August 2026- August 2027.

You'll be working in an acute male ward for adults of working age (18-65) with approximately 2-3 admissions, 4-6 discharges and about 4 tribunals per week. You'll contribute to the psychiatric assessment and management of patients under the supervision of consultant and working with other medical staff and members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT).

The role involves a 9:1 split of direct clinical care to supporting professional activities. This is an 'out of training scheme' post and is not accredited as a training post. However, we offer extensive training opportunities and you'll have weekly clinical supervision from the ward Consultant Psychiatrist.

We are looking for FY1-FY2 level trainees with experience of managing serious psychiatric illness including assessment of suicide risk. All applicants must have full GMC registration.

Main duties of the job

Day-to-day management of the inpatients on the wards including ward-rounds (typing contemporaneous clinical notes into the electronic patient records), CPA review, discharge planning meetings, and Mental Health Act managers or tribunal hearings. This will be under the clinical supervision of the inpatient consultants from the team. Liaison with the Community Mental Health team to ensure co-ordinated clinical care of patients.Support the assessment and management of patients brought to the Health Based Place of Safety- this will primarily be done by the Consultant and SAS doctor. Providing timely written correspondence to relevant professionals documenting assessments, ongoing management, progress, and discharge summaries using Trust IT and clinical records system - training will be provided where needed. Work collaboratively with other agencies, liaison with staff from other teams to manage smooth and timely transfer into and out of the unit. The teams most commonly involved with this will be the Adult Community Mental Health Teams, and Ashurst Ward Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. Active commitment to delivering the Trust's clinical governance agenda. Wards lead their own governance agenda including audit, quality, patient experience, learning from incidents, patient safety initiatives and interrogation of data. The senior leadership team comprising of matron, consultant and ward manager will link with division both identifying areas of concern and feeding back actions.

Adult In-Patient Services Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire

The Acute Inpatient pathway in Oxfordshire includes 4 acute wards: Vaughan Thomas (Male), Allen (Female) and Wintle (Female) on the Warneford Hospital Site and Phoenix Ward (Male) at the Littlemore Mental Health Centre site. PICU (Ashurst ward) for the whole service (Oxford and Buckinghamshire) is located at The Littlemore Mental Health Centre. There are 3 Hospital Based Places of Safety (for S136 MHA purposes) in Oxfordshire: on Ashurst ward, Phoenix ward and Vaughan Thomas Ward. Inpatient psychiatric facilities in Buckinghamshire are provided currently in Aylesbury at the Whiteleaf Centre (two acute adult wards, and a rehabilitation ward). All inpatient wards are currently AIMS accredited.
