We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinkingsubstantiveConsultantinGeneralandColorectal Surgery, with a subspecialist interest inPelvic Floorto join ourteam.We seek an individual who ismotivatedandcommitted to deliveringhigh standardsof patient care, service innovation, education, and clinical governance.Thisisan exciting opportunityto contribute to the delivery and continued development ofthe existinghigh-qualityelectivecolorectal service, in addition to supporting the busy emergency service.The successful candidate will joinourwell-established multidisciplinary team providing elective and emergency colorectal care to a diverseand multi-ethnicpatient population.

Main duties of the job

TheappointedConsultant Colorectal Surgeon will:

Provide high-quality elective and emergency colorectal surgical care

Participate in theGastrointestinal(GI)Surgeryand specialist Colorectalon-call rota

Contribute to colorectal multidisciplinary team meetings and cancer pathways

Support the continued development of colorectal surgical servicesby engagement with colleagues, Clinical Management Group, wider Trust,GPsand commissioners

Supervise and teachresidentdoctorsandsurgical trainees

Participate in audit, governance, research, and quality improvement activities

Work collaboratively with nursing, allied health professionals, and medical colleagues to ensure safe and effective patient care

Proactivelyengage with administration colleagues to support high quality and efficient patient journeys

Maintainaccurateclinical records andcomply withTrust policies and professional standards

Respond to Trust requirements for the handling of complaints or investigations

Undertakerequired induction,statutoryand mandatorytraining,appraisaland revalidation

Job description Job responsibilities

Delivery ofconsultant-ledelectivecolorectal surgical services acrossinpatient, outpatient, and theatre settingsfor patientswith a broad range of colorectal conditions, ensuring care is delivered to the highest clinical standards.

Delivery ofaconsultant-ledservice for patients who present as an emergency to the department of GI surgeryat Leicester Royal Infirmary, via the Emergency Department or from General Practice,working alongside consultant colleagues(SDEC,oesophagogastric)to provide timely senior clinical decision-making forand management ofurgent and emergency surgical admissions.

Provision oflower GI endoscopy services across main Trust sites and incommunity hospitals, ifappropriate.

Regular mandatory participation inweeklycolorectaland analcancer MDT meetings.

Close liaison with on-site Gastroenterology colleagues.

In addition to direct clinical care, the post holder will play a key role in supporting the education and training of junior medical staff, surgical trainees, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.Given our affiliation with the University of Leicester Medical School, there will be opportunities toparticipatein undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, as well as mentorship and supervision responsibilities.

Activeengagementin clinical governance activities including audit, morbidity and mortality review, guideline development, and quality improvement projects.

Participation in research and service innovation is encouraged, supporting the departments commitment to delivering modern, evidence-based surgical care.

The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues across surgery, oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, pathology, and specialist nursing teams tomaintainand enhance the quality of colorectal services within the Trust.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications Essential

Full GMC Registration Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of interview date Full GMC Registration MB BS/MB ChB or Equivalent MRCS or Equivalent Current BLS Certification

Desirable

Membership of relevant Specialist Associations Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or equivalent. 6-12 months Post CCT Fellowship in Pelvic Floor

Experience and Clinical skills Essential

Fully trained in General Surgery Fully competent in Emergency General Surgery Fully competent in Colorectal Surgery. Subspecialisation in Functional Bowel and Pelvic Floor disorders, in order to provide elective outpatient services and pelvic floor surgery Ability to conduct Colorectal clinics/MDT independently Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems. Demonstrates clear, logical thinking / analytical approach. Willingness to develop clinical skills and experience in area of interest. Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the Job Plan.

Desirable

Undertaken a period of specialist pelvic floor training in a nationally recognised pelvic floor centre JAG accreditation in colonoscopy Evidence of commitment and clear passion in developing the Pelvic Floor Service

Audit and Quality Improvement Essential

Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit Participation in a quality improvement programme Experience of quality improvement work and audit

Desirable

Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement Published Audit including quality improvement.

Research Essential

Understanding and interest in research Ability to appraise research critically Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research projects Evidence of recent research and development activity

Desirable

Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer reviewed journals on subjects relevant to the specialty. Evidence of clinical or research commitment to relevant specialty interest.

Teaching Essential

Experience of and a commitment to training/ teaching undergraduate and postgraduates. Appraisal and assessment skills Ability to asses clinical competencies Enthusiastic and ability to inspire and lead others.

Desirable

Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching Post Graduate qualification in teaching and training
