Job summary
The Cardiology Specialty at North Bristol NHS Trust are looking to appoint a full-time Clinical Fellow for a period of 12 months with potential extension until the candidate is successfully to a Cardiology training rotation. This is a post that will provide excellent opportunities for gaining experience in Cardiology and we are seeking someone with enthusiasm for a career in Cardiology.
The post is neither Royal College nor Postgraduate approved for training, but is educationally sound and well supported. In particular, there will be training in transthoracic echocardiography which will put the successful candidate in an excellent position to sit their BSE written examination. The successful candidate will also get experience in the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory.
It is expected that at the end of the post the successful candidate will be in a good position to apply in the ST3 recruitment round.
Full Registration with the GMC is essential.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Fellow will work closely with the Consultants, Associate Specialist, Cardiology middle and junior grade medical staff and Cardiology Nurse and Heart Failure Specialists, and will support the cardiology team, cardiology nurses and cardiology physiologists, in delivering both inpatient and outpatient care. The post holder will gain experience in the assessment of inpatients with a broad variety of acute and chronic cardiac conditions, as well as experience in outpatient work.
There are no out of hours on call commitments but the candidate may be able to support the on call medical team at the weekend if wanted via tha bank.

Educational Approval

Clinical experience
This position will provide an excellent grounding in Cardiology which will put the successful candidate into an advantageous position when coming to Cardiology SpR interviews. The candidate will gain considerable experience in managing Cardiovascular conditions, closely supported by senior staff. Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff as appropriate.
Over the 12-month post the candidate will develop increasing confidence in Cardiac patient management.

Teaching
Teaching, examination and accreditation duties as requested by the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education and agreed with your clinical manager. Contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate and continual medical education activity locally.
Research
Although the appointee will not normally be expected to undertake research, opportunities do exist and encouragement is given to develop collaborative projects with other departments at North Bristol NHS Trust and the University of Bristol.
The post-holder will be required to submit or research development plans which have resource implications to the Clinical Director prior to implementation.
There are professionally staffed Medical Libraries, with a rapid service between these and the University Library situated in the centre of the City of Bristol. A computer literature search facility is available for which a charge is made and the library has links with other networks. The libraries are at the forefront of developments in electronic knowledge delivery.
Clinical Audit
The postholder will be required to take part in a Clinical Audit Programme. The Trust has an audit department which supports and monitors such activity. There is an active Trust Clinical Audit
Person Specification
Qualifications and Registration Essential
Full registration with the GMC Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (or equivalent). In date ALS certificate. MB ChB or equivalent
Desirable
Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS). Completion of a general management course or programme.
Work Experience Essential
Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent). Minimum of 4 years postgraduate experience in an approved general medical training rotation or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential. Training in diagnosis and treatment of all general medical conditions Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career Experience in audit project and written up. Ability to work on-call in Cardiology at a Clinical Fellow level.
Desirable
Some training in practical cardiology procedures Requirement to be aware of broader context of NHS. Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Essential
Proven teaching ability. Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues. Knowledge of political context within which we operate. Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team. Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff.
