This is a fantastic opportunity for a nurse to not only train as a General practice Nurse but be part of an innovative project. The aim of this project is to extend and enhance the current opportunities for education and training in Primary care and beyond, while creating extra capacity and retaining current nursing staff. This post is a developmental GPN Learner role, designed for a registered nurse undertaking the General Practice Nurse (GPN) Foundation Programme.
The role provides a structured combination of:
Academic learning (GPN Foundation Course) Supervised clinical practice within general practice Competency-based development

Undertake the GPN Foundation Training Programme to support your development Work collaboratively with a range of healthcare professionals in primary care Deliver safe, supervised patient care within your level of competence Develop your clinical knowledge and skills in line with GPN competency frameworks Contribute to delivering high-quality patient care and supporting practice priorities Provide backfill support to enable experienced GPN staff to participate in training
About us
Islington GP Federation (IGPF) is a growing organisation representing 31 practices; we have established ourselves as a leader in new ways of working, including running Islingtons extended access primary care services (I: HUB) as well as supporting the Islington Primary Care Networks (PCNs). Our current range of services include the Extended Access Service, I: HUB, Community Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Integrated Community Gynaecology, practice-based pharmacists and a range of practice support mechanisms.
IGPF works very closely with a range of partners including the regional commissioning group, NHS England, Healthy London Partnership, Public Health, local hospitals such as UCLH, Whittington Health and the London Borough of Islington.
IGPF is the host organisation for the Primary Care Network (PCN) workforce and the Islington Training Hub and has been working for over three years to create training and development programmes that meet the needs of staff working in primary and community care settings.
IGPF runs four Islington GP Practices-Northern Medical Practice, Barnsbury Medical Practice, City Road Medical Centre and Hanley Primary Care Centre

Key duties and responsibilities:
To develop the necessary skills and competencies required to become a Practice Nurse. Work within their level of competency at all times. Deliver patient care under supervision of senior clinicians. Develop skills to manage the changing needs of the patients and the practice. Ensure competency documentation is completed and signed off appropriately. Administer medications/immunisations under PSD/PGD where competent. Promote health and wellbeing through patient education. Contribute to Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) delivery. Carry out routine clinical tasks under supervision. produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultation, consistent with legislation, policies and procedures. Be aware of data protection (GDPR) and confidentiality issues. Review and process data using accurate read codes in order to ensure easy and accurate information retrieval for monitoring and audit processes.
Additional Duties:
Maintaining & cleaning of equipment used by nurses & GPs. Stocking clinical rooms and rotating stock as required. Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of clinical rooms. Ordering of stock, vaccines & promotional materials. Checking stock levels and expiry dates of drugs cupboard and resuscitation trolley. Record vaccine fridge temperatures twice daily. Assist other members of the practice team as appropriate. To maintain infection control and update procedures and advice. Apply practice policies, standards and guidance.
GPN Learner Responsibilities
The GPN Learner will be employed on a fixed-term basis specifically to undertake the GPN Foundation Programme. Continued employment is conditional upon active engagement with the programme.
The post holder will be:
Attending and actively participating in all scheduled GPN Foundation Programme teaching days as delivered by the education provider. Completing all modules, competency documentation, and assessments within agreed timeframes. Maintaining regular communication with their mentor/clinical supervisor, including sharing learning after each session and agreeing appropriate supervised clinical experience. Actively engaging in practice-based learning by embedding within day-to-day general practice operations. Working within own limitations in line with the NMC Code and not undertaking independent clinical activity without appropriate supervision and sign-off. Attending clinical placements on all contracted working days outside of academic teaching time (including periods when teaching is not scheduled). Demonstrating professionalism and commitment to the programme. Failure to attend, engage, or complete required elements may result in review and potential termination of the fixed-term contract.
Person Specification
Experience Essential
Experience working in a clinical healthcare setting (post-registration or student placement experience). Experience delivering patient care within a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrable understanding of patient safety and working within scope of practice.
Desirable
Experience in primary care, community nursing, or outpatient settings. Experience in delivering basic clinical skills (e.g. observations, wound care, vaccinations under supervision). Experience using electronic patient record systems. Evidence of working across organisational boundaries within health and social care.
Qualifications Essential
Registered Nurse with current NMC registration. Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable
Evidence of recent clinical training relevant to primary care. Mentorship/assessor training (or willingness to work towards supported learning frameworks).
Knowledge Essential
Understanding of the role of General Practice Nursing within primary care. Awareness of the NMC Code and professional accountability. Good communication skills (verbal and written). Ability to reflect on practice and apply learning. Basic IT skills and ability to maintain accurate clinical records. Understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, and information governance. Ability to write comprehensive clinical notes.
Desirable
Awareness of: Chronic disease management in primary care Public health and health promotion principles Quality frameworks such as QOF
