About this role

Job summary

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) post based at the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust Plastic Surgery Department. The Plastic Surgery Department at the Royal Free is a busy and dynamic unit that provides care both for the local population in North Central London and to a much larger network around North London, and the Home Counties.

In addition to the Royal Free Hospital, the trust manages plastic surgery services in the following locations:

Mount Vernon Hospital

Watford General Hospital

St Albans City Hospital

Barnet General Hospital

Edgware Community Hospital

Services are also provided at the following sites:

Hillingdon Hospital

Luton & Dunstable Hospital

Whittington Hospital

University College Hospital

Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital

Harefield Hospital

Northwick Park Hospital

The service is configured such that inpatient work, day case work involving general anaesthetic and specialist outpatient services are generally delivered from the Royal Free Hospital. At each 'spoke' in the network there are a combination of general outpatient services, operating under local anaesthetic and in some cases clinical partnerships with consultants in other specialties for joint operating.

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities:

The post-holder will work at SpR level. He/she will be expected to undertake appropriate surgery and assist in the operating theatre, take part in ward rounds and assist in outpatient plastic clinics, as directed by the Consultants.The successful applicant will engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, and the Trusts clinical governance systems.Support infection prevention & control and antimicrobial stewardship activities.Participate in laboratory and clinical research projects.The postholder will undertake plastic surgery clinics and provide care for patients with a wide range of plastic surgical conditionsAttend and support the microsurgical cases during the week. Help plan and organise complex reconstructive cases via each departments MDT.Expectation of being faculty on microsurgery coursesAim for peer-reviewed publication during fellowshipComplete a service improvement projectActively involved in training more junior doctors

Person Specification

Education & professional qualifications Essential

Possession of MBBS or equivalent medical qualification Eligible for GMC registration Membership of relevant Royal College or equivalent Post FRCS (Plast)

Desirable

Higher Degree MSc, MD, PhD Evidence of peer-reviewed Publications Evidence of service improvements

Experience Essential

Experience in microsurgical breast reconstruction At least 5 years' previous work experience within a Plastic Surgery team Evidence of competence in microsurgery Completed basic surgical training including ST2 Experience in General Plastics

Desirable

Experience in microsurgical extremity reconstruction and head and neck flaps Publications in peer-reviewed plastic surgery journals

Skills and aptitudes Essential
