About this role

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has opened for a Transfusion Practitioner to join the Hospital Transfusion Team at UCLH Foundation Trust.

This is a permanent position, ideal for a dynamic, experienced nurse or a biomedical Scientist with substantial post-registration experience in blood and blood product transfusion in a clinical or transfusion laboratory setting. This role is particularly suitable for those with strong interest in training.

We are seeking a flexible, confident individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with staff at all levels involved in the transfusion process across the Trust. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a collaborative team.

Main duties of the job

The post has a Trust-wide remit encompassing transfusion education and training, clinical audit, quality improvement, and risk management. The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting the safe and appropriate use of blood and blood components, while supporting initiatives that optimise patient blood management and encourage the use of appropriate alternatives to transfusion where clinically indicated.

Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, the post holder will support the delivery of transfusion education and training programmes for clinical staff, contribute to audit activities, and assist in the development and implementation of quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing transfusion safety and governance. The role also involves supporting the investigation and management of transfusion-related incidents, identifying opportunities for learning, and contributing to the development of risk reduction strategies.

Together with the Hospital Transfusion Team, the post holder will promote awareness of current regulatory, statutory, and national requirements relating to transfusion practice and support the implementation of measures to ensure compliance with relevant standards, guidelines, and best practice.

The successful candidate will provide specialist advice and support to clinical teams involved in the transfusion process and will be expected to liaise effectively with staff at all levels across the organisation. Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills are essential, together with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an individual with relevant transfusion experience and an interest in education, governance, patient safety, and quality improvement to make a significant contribution to the ongoing development of transfusion services and the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications Essential

Registered Nurse/ BMS Relevant post-registration/graduate programme Relevant post registration experience in relevant specialty Completed/completing master's degree or can provide evidence of relevant equivalent experience / training whilst working at a senior level.

Desirable

Teaching/Assessment programme Leadership development programme/ experience Management development programme/ experience

Experience Essential

Demonstrates up to date knowledge and expertise in the specialty Evidence of developing & leading nurse / BMS led services/ clinics.

Skills and Abilities Essential

Evidence of continuing professional development Previous experience of formal & informal teaching of patients & staff. Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice Skills in critical analysis and application of research to practice Previous experience of developing standards, guidelines, and policies Previous experience in audit and evaluation of practice / services
