Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic band 7 bank Orthotist to help support our in-house orthotics department to be able to wort flexibly to cover at short notice sickness or extended leave.
The service provides both inpatient and out patient interventions, specialist clinics which include complex Paediatrics services, high risk diabetes multi-disciplinary foot clinics and rehabilitation clinics. Main duties of the job
To provide a full and comprehensive Clinical Orthotic service to the Trust and external agencies as required.
To provide an extended scope/clinical specialist role in Diabetes or Paediatrics.
To participate in clinical audit, research/development and teaching activities as required.
To maintain a personal clinical caseload, including all areas of Orthotics, undertaking highly complex clinical assessments and examination of patients with a broad range of disabilities, to provide suitable highly specialist orthotic clinical-technical prescriptions including highly complex and paediatric cases.

Job description Job responsibilities
To provide a full and comprehensive Clinical Orthotic service to the Trust and external agencies as required.
To provide an extended scope/clinical specialist role in Diabetes or Paediatrics To participate in clinical audit, research/development and teaching activities as required. To maintain a personal clinical caseload, including all areas of Orthotics, undertaking highly complex clinical assessments and examination of patients with a broad range of disabilities, to provide suitable highly specialist orthotic clinical-technical prescriptions including highly complex and paediatric cases.
Communications and Working Relationships:
To establish and maintain effective communication with external suppliers to ensure a timely supply of quality orthoses that are value for money. The post holder is to use excellent negotiation and counselling skills to ensure the effective communication of highly complex, highly sensitive and emotional information and to overcome barriers to understanding. The communication will be assisted by the post holder having developed knowledge of previous outcomes from similar complex clinical cases they have treated in the past. The post holder will receive highly complex information and is to provide highly complex and highly contentious information to consultants and other healthcare professionals. The post holder will need to effectively communicate specialist knowledge of NICE guidelines and up-to-date research. The post holder will communicate with external companies and manufacturers on the individual design of bespoke orthoses to ensure effective provision of orthoses within the minimum number of patient episodes. This information will include the sharing of highly developed specialist knowledge in the area of material science, mechanics, fabrication methods and manufacturing processes. The post holder will report as appropriate with the Podiatry & Orthotics Manager order to ensure effective Clinical Governance and assist in the implementation of long-term strategies in line with NHS guidelines and National Service Frameworks. The post holder will be the clinical lead specialist in the area of Orthotics for the Diabetic patient and will therefore need to present to large numbers of healthcare professionals including consultants on clinical matters, research and developments. The post holder will provide verbal, visual and written information, explanation and highly specialised clinical advice to the patient and / or carers at every stage of orthosis provision, obtaining informed consent when necessary. The post holder will be able to negotiate care plans with patients and carers using motivational and supportive skills to overcome any differences in opinions and understanding to ensure co-operation and compliance with treatment plan. This communication will include educating the patient and carer on aspects of their medical condition and design and function of the orthosis that is to be provided. The post holder will report patient adverse incidents that relate to the provision of Orthotics to the Trust and to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to maintain patient safety and engage in national reporting and monitoring procedures for specialised medical devices. The post holder will maintain effective working relationships with other departments to enable improvements to multidisciplinary working that crosses department boundaries.
The post holder will communicate effectively with orthotics staff and support staff to motivate and encourage staff development and to ensure seamless running of the Orthotics Service The post holder will ensure excellent written and verbal communications are maintained with patients, carers, relatives and members of the health and social care teams The post holder will maintain excellent clinical notes as a form of written communications in line with national guidelines. Physical Effort
There is an on-going need to bend kneel and crawl when assessing patients particularly when assessing patients feet.
Approximately three times a day the post holder will need to perform highly skilled casting techniques in complex clinical situations. This can involve holding the weight of a limb whilst casting that can take up to 40 minutes.
It is necessary for the post holder to operate heavy equipment on a daily basis, including workshop equipment and diagnostic/measurement equipment. The workshop equipment in particular can require the application of force to operate it when performing mechanical and technical adjustments to orthoses
Moving patients on a daily basis can include hoisting, moving patients in the bed and moving patients from sitting to standing
The post holder will need to be physically able to cope with a frequent requirement for moderate physical activity

Mental effort and concentration when examining and assessing patients is sustained for entire clinics which can be up to 4 hours long and happen on a

Qualifications Essential
Bsc (Hons) Prosthetics and Orthotics or equivalent. Plus additional post grad training, experience and knowledge to masters level or equivalent experience Registered with Health Professions Council Driving Licence and own vehicle essential

Experience Essential
Post-registration experience, providing a broad range of experience in provision of orthotics for orthopaedic, neurology, paediatrics and diabetes. Experience of line management is desirable Supervision of student Orthotists and junior Orthotists
Skills Essential
A specialist knowledge across a range of orthotic practices, routine and non-routine, requiring expertise within the field of orthotics Knowledge and extensive experience of management of patients with a wide range of complex pathology requiring orthotic assessment and provision. Knowledge and experience of assessment and management of paediatric patients, diabetic patients and complex orthopaedic patients Attendance at recent postgraduate courses relevant to orthotics CPD portfolio Managerial knowledge and experience
