Job SummaryThis position is part of the Office of Environmental Management - Headquarters, Department of Energy. As a Environmental Protection Specialist, you will serve as key policy and technical advisor for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance at EM sites, providing guidance and recommendations on complex and emerging issues relevant to NEPA.

QualificationsSPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following: Evaluating and approving environmental impact analyses, risk assessments, or cleanup plans. Analyzing environmental regulations, internal policies, and procedures to advise senior leaders. Managing and/or leading environmental projects or programs. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Limit your resume to no more than two (2) pages. Major DutiesAs a Environmental Protection Specialist, you will: Formulate, review, and integrate national-level environmental policies, legislative proposals, and regulatory frameworks for the agency. Provide strategic direction, oversight, and administration for major environmental programs, tracking program milestones, and managing the allocation of large-scale funding, grants, or cooperative agreements. Serve as the principal advisor and recognized authority to senior agency leadership, federal/state/local officials, tribal leaders, and private sector representatives on highly sensitive, precedent-setting environmental issues. Manage agency-wide compliance and enforcement strategies, directing complex investigations, environmental audits, and corrective actions to resolve significant or unprecedented operational violations. Direct the evaluation, documentation, and approval of environmental impact statements. Represent the agency in negotiations, public hearings, and interagency workgroups to resolve conflicting stakeholder interests and shape cooperative environmental initiatives.
