Job summary

Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology

The opportunity for a Clinical Fellowship in Medical Microbiology has arisen, based at North Bristol NHS Trust, Southmead Hospital. The post is for a period of 12 months, commencing August 2026. The exact start date is negotiable. Both full time and less than full time will be considered, based on previous experience.

This would be an ideal opportunity to experience working in a tertiary referral centre with a prominent Microbiology department and would suit those interested in a career in Infection Specialties, or those with experience who want to extend their knowledge.

This post has neither Royal College or Postgraduate approval for training. However, the post is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining experience in clinical Infection management.

This post will be based at North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT), Southmead Hospital in Infection Sciences (Medical Microbiology), but the applicant may also spend time on-site at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Full Registration with the GMC is essential. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices is essential. Candidates who have previously held the role are not eligible to reapply.

The post can also include on call provision for our infection services. Please note that this is only available to candidates that have full MRCP. Any candidates without this could only take up the role without on call allocation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide clinical microbiology services to North Bristol NHS Trust and UHBW (University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust), the site depending upon the requirements of clinical services, and can include on-call service (this is only for candidates with full MRCP) supporting the local infection departments, including HCID (High Consequence Infectious Diseases) cover.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Registration Essential

MBChB Full registration with the GMC (with license to practice)

Desirable

Intercalated BSc and/or higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MSc or DTM&H) MRCP (full)

Training and Education Essential

Clinical experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent). Minimum of 2 years postgraduate experience including 1 year as F2 in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential. Experience in the management of patients with complex infection.

Desirable

Training in Infection specialties such as Infectious Diseases or Microbiology/Virology.

Further Training, Management, Audit Essential

Evidence of recent CME/reasonable training progression at this stage of career. Experience in audit project with write up.

Research, Teaching, and Publications Essential

Proven teaching ability with formal feedback and reflection. Willingness to undertake teaching of medical undergraduates and postgraduates

Desirable

Track record in research. Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals. Teaching qualification

Personal Requirements Essential

Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels. Good written communication skills. Demonstrates compliance with all aspects of GMC Good Medical Practice.
