We have an opportunity for a Children and Young Adult Speech & Language Therapist to join their team of staff in the Physiotherapy department.
This is a bank role working on an as and when required basis, you will be required to supplement staffing levels during busy periods and provide cover for existing staff in times of annual leave or absence.
Main duties of the job
Conduct detailed assessments of speech, language, communication, and swallowing functions using a variety of clinical tools and techniques. Develop and deliver evidence-based treatment plans tailored to individual patient goals, including communication therapy, voice therapy, and dysphagia management. Monitor and review progress, adjusting intervention plans as required to optimise patient outcomes. Collaborate with medical teams, nursing staff, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care. Participate in ward rounds, case conferences, and discharge planning, providing specialist input and recommendations. Contribute to shared goal-setting and care planning for patients with complex needs. Educate patients, families, and carers about therapy strategies, communication aids, and safe swallowing practices. Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation in line with HCPC, RCSLT, and organisational policies.

Clinical Assessment and Intervention

Multidisciplinary Team Working

Contribute to shared goal-setting and care planning for patients with complex needs.
Education and Communication
Educate patients, families, and carers about therapy strategies, communication aids, and safe swallowing practices.
Provide training and advice to colleagues and support staff on communication and dysphagia management.
Advocate for patients' communication and swallowing needs across the care pathway.
Clinical Governance and Documentation
Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation in line with HCPC, RCSLT, and organisational policies.
Adhere to infection prevention, safeguarding, health and safety, and data protection regulations.
Participate in audit, outcome monitoring, and service development projects.
Equipment and Assistive Technology
Recommend and support the use of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) tools and resources.
Support the prescription and use of communication aids, voice amplification devices, and swallowing equipment where appropriate.
Liaise with suppliers and external services to ensure timely provision and support.
Professional Development
Maintain HCPC registration and a CPD portfolio in line with professional requirements.
Attend relevant training courses, conferences, and supervision sessions to enhance clinical
knowledge and skills.
Contribute to the learning of others through mentoring, student supervision, or peer support.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
BSc (Hons) or MSc in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent). HCPC registration as a Speech and Language Therapist. Strong clinical reasoning, communication, and problem-solving skills. Experience working with communication and/or swallowing disorders. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT). Postgraduate training in dysphagia or a specialist clinical area. Experience working in acute hospital, neurorehabilitation, oncology, or critical care settings. Involvement in service development, audit, or quality improvement initiatives. Previous CYP experience, specifically speech delay, essential.
