About this role

Job summary

This is a full-time Clinical Fellow post (ST3-5 equivalent) in response to Service need. This post is for the period 1st August 2026 to 31st July 2027 with possibility of extension subject to mutual agreement.

A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will work at the registrar level. Daily activities will be varied and include some or all of ward work (pre- and post-operative care of thoracic surgical patients), attendance in theatre for major, intermediate and minor procedures, attendance at gastroscopy (voluntary) sessions, out-patient clinics as well as multi-disciplinary meetings for lung and upper GI (voluntary) cancers.

Departmental Educational Activities:The thoracic surgical unit is committed to teaching and training, supporting all aspects of both. We support our junior staff with research and encourage the publication of papers (case reports, original studies and reviews). We envisage the appointee being fully involved with this aspect of the department's work.

On-Call:The present arrangements are to provide non-residential on call with 1:4 frequency on weekdays with 1:4 weekend frequency. The junior doctors system operates with cross cover being provided from urology and general surgery with related specialties. A consultant thoracic surgeon is always on call and can be contacted to discuss any problem.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Full registration with the GMC and with Licence to Practise Basic medical qualification (MB BS or equivalent)

Clinical Training and Experience Essential

Four years of FY and CT training or equivalent in surgical specialities Capable of managing patients on ward and dealing with acute emergencies

Desirable

Experience in a relevant specialty

Aptitudes Essential

Good communicator. Capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team. Enthusiasm for service development and teaching. Hard working and well-motivated yet considerate of needs of others.

Experience Essential

Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years training period in the National Health Service required for the specialty. Training and expertise in children's safeguarding. Satisfactory knowledge of basic sciences and the ability to apply this to clinical practice.

Desirable

ATLS BSSC Publication or participation in research project Some evidence of case/paper presentations Carried out a clinical audit project.

Commitment to develop an appropriate special interest

Circumstances Essential

Flexible outlook on working hours. Must live within a 15-mile radius of the base Trust or 30 minutes travelling time. Ability to travel across multi-sites whilst public transport may not be available.

Communications and Language Skills Essential

Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, colleagues in pathology and support staff Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries

Desirable

Good presentation skills.
