About this role

Job summary

This is a locum consultant post (8PA part time) for a fully accredited paediatrician with sub-specialty training in Respiratory Paediatrics, although applicants who can demonstrate appropriate training in respiratory paediatrics who do not have full CCST in this will be considered. The post holder will contribute to the management of children with Cystic Fibrosis/non-CF Bronchiectasis and also share in the clinical management of children with other respiratory conditions. The post does not have any Neonatal or General Paediatric responsibilities. On-calls are non-resident for Respiratory Paediatrics only, with weekend telephone rounds with occasional need to attend on site.

The post is based at the Royal London Hospital located in Whitechapel, London, part of Barts Health NHS Trust (Royal London Hospital, Barts Hospital, Mile End, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals) which is now one of the largest trusts in the UK. The trust has close links to the other district general hospitals in the North East London area and provides a tertiary referral service. It is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations.

Main duties of the job

Tertiary Clinical Care

To provide a high quality, accessible Consultant led Respiratory service.

To participate in a 1 in 6 respiratory consultant of the week on call in-patient cover system. This may include review of children on NICU and PCCU. There is no commitment to General Paediatrics or Neonatology. Weekend telephone ward rounds with occasional need to come in.

To share in the management of children with asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic suppurative lung disease, interstitial lung disease, those on invasive and non-invasive ventilation as both in and outpatients.

Your duties will include

General respiratory outpatient clinics.

Cystic Fibrosis MDT outpatient clinics.

Non-CF Bronchiectasis and PCD MDT clinics.

Shared responsibility for the bronchoscopy service.

Transition of patients to adult services.

General responsibilities

To provide evidence-based care for all inpatients and outpatients. To provide leadership in teaching and clinical research. To participate fully in the management of the Department and to liaise closely with the Multidisciplinary team. The appointee will work collaboratively and in partnership with the Paediatric consultants and allied health staff to provide clinical leadership in the Paediatric Department.

It is expected that the post-holder will work closely with colleagues from other specialities within the hospital and primary care.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

MBBS or equivalent degree MRCPCH or equivalent On GMC Specialist Register in Paediatric Respiratory or within 6 months of CCT (Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the time of application)

Other postgraduate qualification (MD, PhD, MSc)

Experience Essential

Broad range of clinical experience in Acute Paediatric Respiratory Completion of higher specialist training in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine Experience of LTV and Sleep services Up to date APLS/PALS Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training Valid BLS training experience in management of cystic fibrosis and non CF bronchiectasis

Skills Desirable

Experience in Medical Management roles Knowledge of business planning and budgets Experience of dealing with governance and risk Experience of research projects (including PI)
