Job summary

The surgery team has a fantastic new opportunity available for a permanent senior specialist position. The postholder will provide specialist input into pain services, oversee clinical pharmacy services to the inpatient surgical wards as well as being responsible for clinical pharmacy services to the Dental, Behcet's, Ophthalmology and Oral Medicine Directorate.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and forward-thinking pharmacist eager to develop their specialist clinical skills, contribute to and lead the pharmacy team and wider MDT in these forward-thinking, high-impact, complex clinical environments.

Advanced, current and relevant knowledge of surgical and peri-operative clinical pharmacy practice, including ophthalmology, dental services, evidence-based prescribing, risk management, antimicrobial stewardship, analgesia, anticoagulation, discharge planning, interface care, cost-effective prescribing and quality improvement

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out the full range of duties as a Highly Specialist Pharmacist in Surgery, Pain & Specialist Services to deliver patient focused, quality care, based primarily at the Royal London Hospital. Their primary role will be to look after clinical and operational pharmacy services to the Pain Service, Dental Hospital, Behcet's and Oral Medicine as well as the inpatient surgical wards at The Royal London Hospital alongside the Lead Pharmacist, Surgery and Anaesthetics. They will have a team of rotational foundation and senior pharmacists and medicines management pharmacy technicians to support them.

The post holder will be expected to promote the responsible, safe and cost-effective prescribing of medicines within surgery, peri-operative care and pain to optimise clinical outcomes, minimise adverse reactions and improve medicines safety. The post holder will be supporting the Lead Pharmacist, Surgery and Anaesthetics to lead a team of staff in the delivery of high quality clinical, professional, and technical pharmacy service to all clinical areas and specialities within the division.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Experience of working in a high acuity unit such as acute medical admissions, acute surgical admissions or another rotational role Proven experience of good performance in previous posts Previous evaluations or reviews of medicines Supported with development of careplans for EPMA and guidelines Managing incidents via the PSIRM framework Specialist knowledge in providing a hospital based pharmacy service to medical and surgical wards Extensive experience of teaching and tutoring in a hospital setting through training others e.g. trainee / foundation training pharmacists / nurses / junior doctors Experience in supervising and organising staff and work

Desirable

Experience of working on a high dependency unit Successful experience of managing & leading projects Previous experience of working in gastro, rheumatology or oncology

Understanding of GPhC Revalidation requirements Knowledge of medicines management systems at ward level Advanced clinical knowledge of surgical pharmacy practice Up to date knowledge of legislation relevant to pharmacy practice, e.g. controlled drugs, Health and Safety at Work Understanding of stock control systems Knowledge of evidence-based prescribing and critical appraisal Knowledge of multidisciplinary working within surgical services Has a good foundation knowledge of the medical management and pharmaceutical care needs of Critical Care Level 2 patients Awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues relevant to Critical Care and Surgery patients Knowledge of Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines requirements Understanding of the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation Demonstrates a good understanding of patient safety initiatives Knowledge of drug and therapeutics at Diploma level or equivalent Knowledge of the law and relevant guidance relating to medicines, pharmacy, rationing decisions in the NHS, Payment by Results (PbR) and commissioning in relation to PN Knowledge of education, training and competency development Knowledge of interface issues relevant to the patient group Knowledge of risk management issues relevant to the patient group and root cause analysis Knowledge of planning and delivering quality improvement initiatives

Qualifications Essential

MPharm or equivalent Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC Post graduate certificate in clinical pharmacy as a minimum Independent Prescribing Qualification

Desirable

GCP Training in Clinical Trials Crediantelled or willing to be credentialled as per RPS Framework
