About this role

Job summary

Although this position is a 12 months fixed-term contract, the actual contract duration will be adjusted to account for the time taken to advertise the post, complete the hiring process, and finalise pre-employment checks. This means the contract will begin when the candidate starts the role and may be slightly shorter than 12 months.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, committed and motivated registered nurse to join our Gynaecological team on a full time basis. Newham University Hospital Gynaecology Ward is a 14 bedded acute ward and six recliners for Day Cases, divided into bays and side rooms, caring for people who present with various Gynaecological problems both Electives and Emergency cases including surgical female patients.

We have a strong commitment to staff development and service improvement, and many development opportunities. You will have an excellent induction and orientation programme ensuring you have all the skills necessary to care for gynecological patients

You will be responsible for the day to day management of your own patients ensuring they receive a high standard of patient care. You will be working closely with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure services are delivered in a timely efficient manner with patient safety being at the heart of all we do.

Main duties of the job

The Staff Nurse demonstrates and maintains competence in line with NMC registration requirements. They implement and evaluate holistic care in partnership with patients, carers, and the multidisciplinary team, interpreting clinical data to prevent deterioration. Discharge planning begins on admission, with early referrals and appropriate documentation. They coordinate team activity to support timely treatment, discharge, or transfer and make safe, informed clinical decisions efficiently. Staff Nurses remain calm in high-pressure or emergency situations, maintain accurate records per NMC and unit policies, and organize workloads to ensure safe, effective, quality care. Delegating tasks appropriately, they supervise care delivery, provide patient education, and mentor junior staff. Acting as professional role models, they uphold the Code of Conduct, demonstrate courtesy, and support team building. They challenge sub-standard practice, manage complaints sensitively per Trust policy, and escalate concerns to senior staff. Collaborating across departments, they ensure patient needs are identified, and care is delivered efficiently. As Link Nurses, they promote best practice, assist in implementing the Nursing and Midwifery Strategy, and deputize for senior staff when required. They respond positively to guidance and ensure full compliance with infection control policies, taking action when standards are not met.
