Job summary

Specialty Doctor or ST equivalent depending on experience

To provide high quality emergency and unscheduled care to the population of Dorchester and its environs, as part of the dedicated Emergency Department team.

The duties will be diagnosing, initiating treatment, and arranging further management of patients who attend the Emergency department. This will include major and minor trauma and the range of medical emergencies.

The post holder will also be expected to take part in clinical governance activities and the supervision of junior doctors, teaching of junior doctors, nurse practitioners, medical students, nurses and student nurses.All staff shall undergo annual Mandatory training. The post holder will be expected to keep their clinical skills and knowledge up to date, particularly in respect of ALS and trauma certification. These courses are free and do not come out of the study budget.

The post holder will be expected to take part in audit and QI.

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Department is based at Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester. We are a Trauma Unit with a helipad immediately adjacent which receives major trauma and other incoming patients from the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Due to its location and close vicinity of the helipad we see a disproportionate level of trauma for a department of this size. We have persistently been the top performing trauma unit within Wessex. The department has an 8 Consultant rota. There are 8 Specialty Doctors and 1 Higher Specialist Trainee in Emergency Medicine. The consultants provide a minimum of 12 hours shop floor cover daily and a 24 hour on call and trauma and stroke thrombolysis cover 7 days a week. There are also 18 resident doctors, and a well established majors nurse practitioner service within the department.The hospital, opened in 1997, provides an excellent environment for patients and staff. The department sees over 43,000 patients annually with the activity increasing during the summer holiday season. There is excellent support from the other hospital specialties including anaesthetics, paediatrics, radiology, primary PCI in hours and 24/7 Stroke Thrombolysis.

Person Specification

Education, Quals & Training Essential

ALS, ATLS, APLS or equivalent Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice is required

Desirable

FRCEM/MCEM/MRCEM

Experience Essential

Four years full-time post graduate training (or equivalent gained on part-time or flexible basis). At least two years in specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee or in a relevant specialty. Recent & Significant experience in Emergency Medicine in the UK (or equivalent healthcare system) at F2 or SHO Level

Skills Abilities and Knowledge Essential

Able to make safe assessment and treatment decisions for the core EM presentations. Possession of the clinical skills required to perform procedures such as cannulation, arterial blood gases, catheterisation etc Can perform ED specific skills such as ultrasound, wound management, chest drain placement etc. Can work independently and without supervision in an emergency department Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patients Can give examples of teamwork

Knowledge of the NHS plan/modernisation agenda and the implications for service development Evidence of ability to contribute to the strategic direction of the Trust
