Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician: Sleep and Long-term Ventilation

The Paediatric Respiratory Service at the Royal London Children's Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, is seeking to appoint a substantive Paediatric Respiratory Consultant (10 PAs) to complement five existing Paediatric Respiratory Consultants and a Professor of Respiratory Medicine.

The post holder will help to meet an increased demand for respiratory services across the Trust and allow the continued development of the sub-specialised paediatric respiratory service for children with sleep and long-term ventilation (LTV) requirements in Northeast London. They will also support the paediatric LTV lead and work closely with all members of the Consultant Respiratory Team. The post does not have any neonatal or general Paediatric responsibilities.

We believe this is an exciting opportunity to join a forward thinking multi-disciplinary team in delivering care for a complex and challenging group of patients. It is an excellent opportunity to broaden skills and gain experience in a specialist tertiary service.

Applications at less than full time are welcome and the successful candidate would have the opportunity to amend and develop the job plan with the consultant team to suit their preferences.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the development of respiratory services for children at RLH. They must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work within multidisciplinary teams. The unit proactively promotes clinical governance, and the appointee should be able to demonstrate skills in audit, risk management, and evidence-based guidelines. The post-holder will be required to teach undergraduate students, postgraduate medical staff, and other professionalgroups.

The appointee will provide inpatient and outpatient care for patients with complex respiratory disease. A consultant of the week (COW) system is in place which ensures continuity of care for respiratory inpatients. The COW will be responsible for the day- to-day care of all inpatients admitted under the Respiratory team. They will also be responsible for all new in-patient referrals to the service during the working week. The appointee will be expected to contribute to this on a 1:6 basis. It is expected that all Consultants will support the COW in advising about the management of patients under their long-term care. A rota is in place to cover the Respiratory service out of hours. Cross-cover arrangements are in place to cover patients during times of leave. The appointee will share responsibility for routine and urgent bronchoscopy services (1:6 rota)
