About the role

The University of Birmingham is seeking an experienced Senior Teaching Technician (Anatomy) to support the Human Anatomy Unit within the College of Medicine and Health.

This is an exciting opportunity to support anatomy teaching and the University’s body donation programme within a well-established anatomy facility. You will work closely with academic and professional services colleagues to support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, specialist training activity, and student projects.

The Human Anatomy Unit includes facilities for embalming, prosection, dissection, and small group anatomy teaching within the Medical School. These facilities will transition to the Birmingham Centre for Anatomy, Surgical and Clinical Skills at the Birmingham Health Innovation Campus from August 2026.

You will prepare anatomical material, support practical classes, maintain specialist facilities, and help ensure compliance with Human Tissue Authority standards and health and safety requirements.

About you

You will have substantial anatomy laboratory or related technical experience, together with strong practical knowledge of embalming, anatomical preparation, and anatomy teaching support. Experience handling and embalming donated human material is essential, alongside a strong understanding of anatomy laboratory procedures, health and safety requirements, and Human Tissue Authority standards.

You will be confident producing anatomical prosections, supporting teaching activities, and working collaboratively within a specialist technical team. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail are essential, particularly when maintaining accurate records and ensuring regulatory compliance within a highly regulated environment.

You should also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, good IT skills, and the ability to work independently and flexibly. You must be comfortable working within a mortuary environment and handling donated human tissue.

Informal enquiries can be made to Natasha Russell, Technical Manager (Anatomy and Clinical Skills) by emailing [email protected]
