The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham is seeking a Research Fellow for the UKRI-NERC funded FOC-I project (Formation of Oxidized organic molecules and Climate-relevant particles: A new role of Iodine). FOC-I aims to understand the formation mechanisms of newly identified oxygenated organic molecules that contain iodine – termed I-OOMs - and quantify their role in particle growth. This role involves new laboratory- and computational chemistry based research into atmospheric processes.
Working with Professor Zongbo Shi and the project team, the successful candidate will conduct laboratory flow-tube and simulation-chamber experiments and apply computational chemistry to investigate I-OOM formation under realistic atmospheric conditions.
Given the collaborative nature of the project, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required as well as the ability to meet deadlines, prepare publications and work effectively with other members of the team. Responsibilities
Conduct laboratory flow-tube studies of iodine-containing oxygenated organic molecules using chemical ionisation mass spectrometry. Apply computational chemistry to investigate molecular structures and formation pathways. Support simulation-chamber experiments, including extended overseas research visits. Analyse and interpret experimental and computational data and develop new methods where appropriate. Publish and present research findings and contribute to future funding applications. Work collaboratively with the FOC-I team and support PhD and project students. Contribute to relevant research administration, engagement and wider School activities. Help ensure research objectives, deadlines, and University equality and diversity requirements are met.
Person spec
A PhD, or near completion, in atmospheric chemistry or a related field. A strong background in atmospheric chemistry and practical experience with laboratory flow-tube, chamber or kinetic studies. Experience in computational chemistry and chemical ionisation mass spectrometry is desirable. A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Ability to plan and prioritise research independently, solve problems and use resources effectively. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively. Familiarity with atmospheric modelling approaches and research methods. Ability to contribute to project planning, administration and student support.
