Main duties of the job

A General Practitioner in Wales is a frontline doctor delivering comprehensive, community-based care, acting as the first point of contact for patients. Key duties include conducting consultations (in-person or telephone), home visits (when required), diagnosing conditions, prescribing treatment, and managing chronic diseases, usually working within a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

Clinical Care: Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients at the surgery or in their homes.

Preventative Health: Offering health education and promoting prevention within the community.

Referrals: Referring patients to hospital specialists or other healthcare professionals when necessary.

Administration: Maintaining accurate patient records, signing, and managing electronic systems.

Teamwork: Working closely with practice staff, including nurses, pharmacists, and administrative teams.

Compliance: Ensuring compliance with Welsh health board policies, including GDPR and safeguarding.

About us

This post is for maternity cover for 12 months starting from 20th July 2026. Ideally looking for someone who is available for 8 sessions per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) but can look at a job share for the right candidate.

We are a BCU managed practice with 8,800 patients covering two practices both within the Holyhead locality. We have an excellent team within the surgery including admin support along with on-site pharmacists and pharmacy technicians (who provide much needed face to face clinics with patients). We also have a team of ANP's, Advanced Paramedics, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants and a number of salaried and locum GP's providing an excellent service. We are able to offer our patients appointments with the in-house Audiologist, Mental Health OT, Family Wellbeing Practitioner, In-house Physiotherapist.

We also have access to the Urgent Primary Care Centre which provides an excellent additional service to our patients.

Our clinical system is EMIS and we use electronic prescribing.

Job description Job responsibilities

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, sharing clinical knowledge and experience in a GP Practice.

Manage patient caseloads and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting.

Ensure awareness, compliance and undertaking of all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety. The successful applicant should also effectively communicate and respect the privacy, dignity, needs and beliefs of patients, carers and colleagues, and behave in a welcoming manner that is non judgmental to the individual, respecting their circumstances, feelings priorities and rights. The post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.
