Job summary

Applications are invited for a motivated and reliable Band 3 Data Co-ordinator to join the Newcastle Genetics Laboratories, part of the Yorkshire and North East Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continually expanding field of genomic medicine, supporting the delivery of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)

The Yorkshire and North East GLH is a collaboration between Newcastle Hospitals, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Collectively, we deliver high-quality genomics services across the largest geographical GLH region in the country. Our laboratories have an international reputation for excellence in patient care, specialist diagnostics, scientific research and academic training.

Main duties of the job

As a Genetics Data Co-ordinator, you will work within a multidisciplinary team of clinical scientists, laboratory staff, administrative teams and informatics professionals. You will play a key role in ensuring the efficient management of referrals, the flow of genomic test information, and communication between internal teams and external clinicians.

This role is ideal for someone with strong organisational skills, excellent attention to detail, and a genuine interest in supporting genomic services within the NHS.

Job description Job responsibilities

Provide administrative and datahandling support for Whole Genome Sequencing. Manage the receipt, logging and tracking of patient referrals, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate. Liaise directly with clinical scientists, laboratory staff, and external referring clinicians to support smooth and timely test processing. Maintain and update genomic databases, spreadsheets, and digital tracking systems according to established procedures. Assist in maintaining high standards of data quality, confidentiality and compliance with governance requirements. Provide general administrative support to the laboratory management team, contributing to ongoing service improvement. Job Purpose

To provide an efficient data management service within the Genetics Directorate, including but not limited to invoice production, monitoring 18 weeks compliance, undertaking administration tasks in support of the Molecular and Cytogenetics laboratories. Provide general support to the Head of Genetics IT and Office Manager To work predominantly unsupervised on a day to day basis and act as an integral part of the administration team of the Northern Genetics Service.

Person Specification

KNOWLEDGE Essential

An awareness of the structure and function of databases. A good working knowledge of a variety of computing packages, including Microsoft Word and Excel or Access and familiarity with data collection and collation. High degree of computer literacy Knowledge and understanding of the Microsoft Windows file and folder structure

Desirable

Knowledge of medical terminology

SKILLS Essential

Good communications skills. Organisational skills Good verbal & non-verbal interpersonal communication skills

Desirable

Ability to extract data from a relational database Advanced skills in using Microsoft Word, Excel and Access

EXPERIENCE Essential

Data collection Experience of working in a clinical or information environment Experience of using Microsoft Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office software

Desirable

Data collection and analysis experience Previous NHS experience. Experience using web browsers and internet search tools

QUALIFICATIONS Essential

Good educational background to 'A' level standard or equivalent

Desirable

Typing qualifications ECDL or additional IT qualifications
