Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced and motivated Mechanical Manager to join our Estates & Facilities team. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient operation of mechanical services across the Trust.

The successful candidate will provide specialist expertise in healthcare engineering, lead mechanical compliance and maintenance services, and act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, safe environments for patients and staff, while driving service improvement, performance, and value for money.

You will bring strong leadership skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to manage complex systems, contractors, and multi-site operations in a fast-paced NHS environment. A sound understanding of HTMs, statutory compliance, and risk management is essential.

Main duties of the job

Main duties

Lead and manage mechanical services across the Trust, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient operation of all systems (e.g. water, ventilation, medical gases). Take Trust-wide responsibility for statutory compliance, acting as Authorised Person and ensuring alignment with HTMs and regulations. Oversee maintenance, contractors and CAFM systems to deliver PPM, reactive works, and accurate compliance reporting. Manage budgets, procurement, and lifecycle planning for mechanical assets. Provide expert advice to senior stakeholders and lead on risk, governance, and performance reporting.

Ensuring statutory compliance and patient safety across all mechanical systems. Acting as the Trust's technical authority for mechanical engineering and risk. Leading performance, audits, and compliance assurance. Managing teams and contractors across a multi-site environment.

Act as Authorised Person and technical lead for mechanical engineering, providing Trust-wide assurance and advice. Lead delivery of planned and reactive maintenance programmes, ensuring safety, performance, and service continuity. Manage mechanical services teams and contractors across multiple sites, including performance, development and accountability. Oversee CAFM systems to ensure accurate asset data, compliance tracking and reporting. Lead audits, risk management, and incident investigations, ensuring actions are implemented and risks mitigated. Manage budgets, procurement and contract performance, ensuring value for money. Support lifecycle planning and capital projects, providing expert input into asset replacement and resilience. Produce performance reports and present to senior stakeholders, supporting governance and decision-making.

Person Specification

Education & Qualification Essential

Degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a closely related discipline. Authorised Person (or ability to achieve within 12 months) in one or more of: HTM 02-01 (MGPS), HTM 03-01 (Ventilation), HTM 04-01 (Water). City & Guilds 2079 -11 Cat 1 Safe Handling of Refrigerants City and Guilds 6187, 6090 or 7189 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning NVQ Level 2 / Level 3 City and Guilds F Gas Compliance Registered with a recognised professional body (e.g., IWFM, CIBSE, IOSH, NEBOSH). Evidence of continued professional development (CPD).

Experience Essential

Knowledge and experience of CAFM software e.g Maximo, MRI or IDOX Demonstrable staff management experience, including contractor oversight. Minimum of 5 years Industry relevant experience in delivery of multi-disciplined contract

Skills and knowledge Essential

Highly developed specialist knowledge of mechanical engineering in healthcare settings; deep familiarity with HTMs, relevant British Standards and statutory legislation. Strong knowledge of statutory and legal requirements impacting NHS estates and facilities. Significant experience managing compliance audits, including regulatory and contractual obligations.
