About this role
Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an organised, motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the liver project team at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). The role focuses on identifying patients across Birmingham who are at risk of developing liver disease and supporting early intervention. Birmingham has a higher-than-average mortality rate from alcoholic liver disease in people under 75, much of which is preventable through lifestyle changes and public health interventions.
Working in partnership with Birmingham City Council, the UHB liver team delivers a Fibro-scanning programme to detect liver damage at an earlier, reversible stage. The post holder will assess high risk patients using blood tests, fibroscans and nutritional screening tools, record and communicate results, arrange follow-up care and escalate urgent cases to hepatologists where required.
The role also involves educating patients on reducing risk factors such as alcohol consumption, obesity and poor diet, while signposting to support organisations including Change, Grow, Live and dietetic services. Excellent communication skills are essential to coordinate care across multidisciplinary teams and engage patients who may face barriers accessing healthcare services.
The post holder will contribute to quality improvement, research and data collection, working across a variety of settings including community clinics, mobile units, homeless shelters, diabetes clinics, rehabilitation centres and GP surgeries.
