Job summary

The Ophthalmic Imaging team at York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to join our rapidly expanding East Coast service. The post holder will deliver high standards of patient care at Scarborough Hospital, Bridlington Hospital and Malton Hospital, therefore the ability to transport yourself across the locality is essential. We envisage this position would be based primarily at Malton Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity where you will be essential in taking high quality diagnostic ophthalmic imaging, in order to help clinicians to diagnose, monitor and treat complex eye conditions. As technology has advanced, the role of the ophthalmic imaging technician has become more varied. The post holder will be a key stakeholder in the future development in ophthalmology services across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The core duties of an Ophthalmic Imaging Technician are to take the most clinically useful OCT scans and fundus photographs, using specialist equipment.

There may also be a requirement for the post holder to undertake biometry, visual fields, visual acuity and instil dilating eye drops.

Experience in general photography, fundus photography and OCT scans is desirable, but not essential, as full training will be provided. Proficiency in using Heidelberg Spectralis, Kowa and Optos is desirable.

We are a very busy, fast paced service so you should be able to work calmly and confidently under pressure.

You should be technically minded, show a keen attention to detail and demonstrate a strong commitment to high standards of patient care. You should have a passion for patient centred care, and kindness that reflects our Trust's values.

You will work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team e.g. Photographers, Clinicians and Nurses. You should have experience and skills in teamwork and be able to demonstrate your ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Knowledge Essential

Demonstrates knowledge of retinal imaging Demonstrates knowledge of patient care and confidentiality Knowledge of hospital services and hospital appointment procedures Computer literate, ability to input and retrieve data accurately, understanding of windows-based IT systems

Desirable

Knowledge of medical terminology and ophthalmic conditions Knowledge of eye anatomy Awareness of current issues within the NHS Clear understanding of the use of policies, protocols and guideline documentation

Experience Essential

Demonstrable experience of highly developed patient care skills in a health environment Excellent hand-eye coordination and developed physical skills required for capturing Ophthalmic images Experience working both autonomously and in a team

Desirable

Previous NHS experience in Ophthalmic Imaging/ diabetic eye screening Previous experience of collaborative working with clinicians, nurses and administrations Experience of dealing with confidential information Experience of working with adults with visual impairment

Qualifications Essential

5 GCSE grade A-C or equivalent including Maths, English and Science NVQ level 3 / A levels or equivalent experience

Desirable

Ophthalmic or Photography qualification Evidence of continued professional development
